p.1 #1 · Fall in Sequoia

I made a trip to see my parents this weekend near Sequoia NP, and figured it might be time for the dogwoods to be changing color.. while most weren't too colorful, this one was

Those Sequoias, I've never seen on in person. It's amazing the trees you have there. Beautiful stoic watchers.

Hi Floris,
I love the subjects but....
I think your processing is just a bit over the top. Tone it down a bit and these are outstanding and up to your standards.

Thanks for the crit Henry, really appreciate it. I toned down the reds in the dogwoods in #1 a little (updated the post), I think it looks better now.

The oranges in the sequoias (in #2 particularly) are getting boosted a bit by the internet without my intention, I think they look ok in photoshop though. It's hard to tell for sure until I print... again, thanks for pointing that out, I have a bit of a weak spot with saturation..

Hi Floris,

That second shot is fantastic. Love the range of colours through the scene.

Unfortunatly, the first shot isn't showing up at the moment

The first is spectacular. I would be very proud to hang that one up. The colors are about perfect.

Hey Floris,

Very cool shots! You captured some really nice color there. I like both of them as they are different, one more intimate, one more of a wider view, but both pleasing.

These are splendid Floris. I love the saturated colors and I'm more than aware some folks don't but it's a subjective choice. I too really like the first and the contrast of the dogwoods in fall color against the beautiful barks of the Sequoia Redwood trees is wonderful. Good to see some fine images from one of my favorite National Parks in California. I lived in Visalis for several years when my wife and I first started our lives together in 1970. Sequoia is a beautiful park, and the size of the trees are unbelievable. I hope you do make it for winter images in the snow, like Yosemite there's something special about each of them in the snow.

I really like #1, Floris. However, #2 looks a bit HDRish. I definitely would like to see what you could do with it in terms of not overprocessing it.

Thanks Randy The Sequoia groves are probably my favorite forests to walk through, those giants just have a special aura around them. And with light cloudy skies they glow such a beautiful orange! I'll definitely go in the winter, I just hope I can make it to my favorite grove... it'll probably be a 10 mile ski (one way)....

hmm.. I didn't actually do much at all to this one. I increased the contrast, boosted the colors (less so than in many of my other images), and did a little dodge/burn here and there to even out the exposure.

The light was pretty even with overcast skies and a neighboring clearing provided the directionality that is making the Sequoias glow on the left side. So the tones are all very natural and not over-processed despite them possibly looking that way. There's not much I can do in 'reducing' the processing other than muting the colors and reducing contrast - would either of those help?

I can kind of see what you mean by HDRish, but this is one of those rare cases where the light actually was this soft and glowing..

These are both very beautiful Floris. Before moving east four years ago my family and I lived about ten minutes from Muir Woods in Marin County. I still miss those majestic trees.
