p.1 #1 · pano/PP critique

Hi all,

This is my first pano, merged and processed in CS2. I'm looking for critique/suggestions regarding color processing. I want to make my colors vibrant without looking over processed. Is this too much...not enough? What do you all think? Thanks in advance!

Dan

Dan, with just looking at the picture these are few things that come to my mind

the clouds (right and center part of the image) are over exposed, the reds are duller, the yellows and greens look good.

I think Ashish has the right area of distraction. The clouds are a tad hot but the colour blue of the sky looks a bit unnatural to my eyes. painting in a more appropriate colour would offer the proper contrast imho.

Ashish and Al,

Thanks for the comments. 2nd image is an edited version, based on your suggestions. I don't want to go too far, but should I push the reds a bit further?

The 2nd has a much better sky. I think the image is a bit over-saturated though. I'd also like to see some more detail in the shadows. They are too dark, and I think that's hiding some color.

Thanks Ben, see version 3. I brought out shadow details like you suggested.

Dan I like #2 the best, But i feel you should mask off the brown grass in the foreground (just beneth the trees) to make it look brown... like the way it is in #1, Also, your yellows have become Orange, i think its ok if you want to have more oranges than yellow, but i think yellow was just fine. and that would complete the whole picture in terms or color. good work

I'll work it over again and make one more post tomorrow to see if I can nail it. Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

Hey Dan,

It's looking better. What doesn't help with this shot is that the tree's are in shade and not being directly lit with the sun. That means the sky is always going to be brighter and by default make the tree's look a bit tame since they are in shade. It would have been best to shoot earlier when the tree's were lit.

Now with this, you did help by darkening the sky, which also helped with the burnt out clouds. In #3, you have the most natural looking sky. But the tree's seemed to get a bit darker then in #2. So for me, the next thing I would do is use a layer mask and brighten just the tree's up about a 1 stop.

Good job on sticking with this!

Ok, here's my last attempt. I'm generally very happy, the only thing I'm still unsure about is whether the colors are realistic or too intense. #1 is 'before' and #2 is the final version. Thanks again all for your help.

Dan, love the colors in #2. love the sky, love the trees.

the Grass looks very dull and lifeless.

In photoshop

layer #2 on on top on #1 and mask off the grass (the greens and browns) in #2. that will do it.

I really like the the little white and purple flowers that can be seen in the grass in #1
