p.1 #1 · Journalism Jobs

So I'm a journalism student about two years out from graduating and not going to lie, but I'm getting really scared about landing a job after school. I've had several internships so far and I also work for the school paper so I feel I'm headed in the right direction. I'm starting to do video and audio work which seems to be a requirement for employment now. Any thoughts on any of this? Thanks.

You're headed in the right direction and doing the right things (internships). Just keep doing your best work and the opportunities will be there. Be willing to start low to get your foot in the door and if you do good work it won't go unnoticed. It's a bit daunting getting out into the real world on your own but you'll do fine.

My Father is a Network Editor with the (Australian) ABC, and he often says that he would prefer people who had a degree in something other then journalism and then a postgrad certificate in english/journalism as it shows that people have a broad range of interests and it is easier for people to report on stuff they have a good understanding of.

That said there are jobs for people with strait journalism degrees, but they are becomming less common as producers/editors look for multi skilled people.

either way good luck!
