Imaging Resource always posts some RAW files while they review a new camera. They use the same setting and the same lens every time when making these test RAW shots. Below you can see 40D and 50D crops (100%) taken from these test RAW files converted with ACR 4.6 beta. I have uprezzed the 40D files to 15MP. I used the default settings in ACR (similair for both images). Both photos were shot with a 24-105L lens attached.
Now Adobe hasn't released an official support for the 50D yet, but this looks kind of disappointing. I hope Adobe can find a "cure" for this...

Camera Raw 4.6 available on Adobe Labs
The Camera Raw 4.6 and DNG Converter Release Candidates (RC) are now available on Adobe Labs. As Lightroom/Camera Raw PM Tom Hogarty explains,
The "release candidate" label indicates that the plug-in is well tested but would benefit from additional community testing before it is distributed automatically to all of our customers. The Camera Raw team would like the community to help verify the quality of the plug-in through normal usage as this will ensure that the plug-in is tested on a diversity of hardware and software configurations not available internally at Adobe.
This release includes official camera support for the following cameras:
Fuji Finepix IS Pro
Nikon D700
Nikon D90
Nikon Coolpix P6000
It also adds preliminary (unofficial) support for these new camera models:
Canon Rebel XS
Canon 50D
Olympus SP-565 UZ
Sony A900
Sigma DP1

Wow, is it old 'monkey eyes...or does the 50D look like crap
Trench, no need to worry about our eyes. I get the feeling that the 50D image is out of focus though. Might explain some of the crappiness (is that a word?).
Well, the 40D image was shot at f/8 and the 50D image was shot at f/16. Maybe that explains partly the difference in sharpness. It could also be that the 24-105L has a bit more trouble keepig up with the 50D sensor than with the 40D sensor. I don't think there were any focus issues. But anyway, apart from the differences in sharpness, take look at the noise levels. Especially in the sky and shadows... that doesn't look good (in comparsion to the 40D).

Or, you may wish to read a more reliable source:
The Canon EOS 50D produced images of excellent quality during the review period. This camera produces noise-free images at ISO 100 all the way up to ISO 1600, with only the fastest setting of 12800 really being unusable. Image stabilisation via the kit lens is a feature that helps the EOS 50D keep up with its competitors, and one that works very well when hand-holding the camera in low-light conditions or when using the telephoto end of the zoom range. The Canon EOS 50D dealt very well with chromatic aberrations, with limited purple and cyan fringing effects appearing only at the edges of the photo in high contrast situations. The 15 megapixel images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera setting. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations. ...Show more →
It is definitely ACR. Try converting them in DPP and you'll see the 50D is better. This is why I don't use ACR. I have noticed this in every Canon camera I have owned which includes all of the xxD series and 1 series.
I just received my 50d 2 days ago and have taken a fair number of test shots and i have seen nothing like the picture shown here...i had the 40d previously and my 50d is at least as good although i no longer have it to compare side by side....i find the foucs on the 50d to be quick and accurate and all the upgrades to be a pleasure...perhaps i am wrong but to me the high ISO performance is marginally better than was on my 40d......

Kind of pointless using that as a benchmark since its a beta software.
Like I said, I hope Adobe comes up with something better in their official release. But since I use ACR/LR exclusively I am not going to buy a 50D (yet) because of this. Basically, if you have a 50D you can only use DPP. And I hate its interface and conversions...

Do you shoot JPEG or RAW? If JPEG, what NR and sharpening settings do you use? If RAW, what converter do you use?

why is the 50d shot @ f16 and the 40d '@ f8? if the 50d is underexpossed and then pushed in post it will get more noise from that.
also others have mentioed problems with this beta for the 50d so I guess things will iron out

Nothing is pushed in PP. These are RAW conversions with default ACR settings only. Come to think of it, the ACR default settings include a +25 color noise reduction. So this is basically all luminance noise. You don't want to see the color noise also... believe me
I am using the beta ACR 4.6 thus far and I have not observed the problems spoken of ....in fact, last night I took some shots for fun and compared them with my markIII and while the markIII was better for sure the 50D definitely held its own

Can you post a 50D 100% crop @ ISO 1600 converted by ACR 4.6 beta with no NR applied at all? Preferably with a 24-105L mounted
