Hello Tom. The second picture is excellent but, I side with your wife. I like that tight crop of the grass and log. Those clouds are cool. Nice catch.

This may sound like a pun but the first image is a bit 'mercurial'.

Take a look at Chip Springer's Paint with Light II action here:
http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm
It works wonders to dodge and burn black and white details. You can use it very effectively to separate the elements in #1 which would be my favorite.
