I went to the Chinese Lantern Festival held here in Toronto (it's on till Oct 13 if any of you are around) a couple of weekends ago. Took some shots with the D1H and new to me LNIB 35 f/1.4 (bought locally). All shots converted from RAW fixed for WB mostly. No PP at all.
Gotta say wide open is kinda soft, but it's still beautiful rendering. Here are some samples for y'all:
I have this lens and I love the solid build, the smooth as butter focus ring, and of course, the image quality. I rarely shoot it at f/1.4 because the contrast is relatively low (and accentuated at times by veiling flare). But for your high contrast night shots, this is mostly not apparent (though there appears to be some around the sword handle images). I will now use it wide open when shooting at night!
Thanks Zach. I'm glad it worked out too I basically shoot the D1H w/o image preview so I pretend it's a film cam
Thanks Ted. I did hear about the veiling flare and I notice it in the sword handle pic as well, but I think the lens does quite well at night (these are basically my test pics) I'm glad to have convinced you to shoot it at night
