I shoot MLB, LPGA, Division I & III football, high school varsity football, lacrosse and baseball. I don't need 10 fps. I've actually set mine for 8 fps maximum in the custom settings since I typically shoot bursts of no more than 3-4 fps.

At 116 mph that club head is moving, i bet more than 10fps would be needed to get the whole range of the swing...
Well, unless you're shooting at your local public course, you wouldn't be shooting until after contact is made with the ball anyway. Unless, of course, you happen to have one of those $99,000 Canon 1000mm lenses

You will notice that the sidelines of major sporting events are lined with Mk3s, which are of course evidence that the Mk3 works well for those who know how to use it... But there are also an unusual number of Nikons as well, something new! And I think it is great to see, Canon has been able to rest on its laurels for too long (Those laurels being excellent high ISO performance!)
A lot of people use the resurgence of Nikon's at sporting events as proof that the Mark III's focusing system is bunk, but I don't really buy it. I loved my 1D Mark III and really can't say I had focusing problems with it - but I still went to Nikon because they have a better range of cameras at this point. The combination of the D3, D300 and D700 which all can share the same battery system, have identical AF systems and a lot of identical functionality is very attractive. Nikon has completely caught up in the noise department and seems dedicated to provide good noise performance over high resolution while Canon seems to be going in the opposite direction. So, you'll see a lot of guys who went to Canon because of low-noise and good AF performance going back to Nikon because they now have both.
I can't seam to get a good shot without my flash or my strobe sync to the camera
when i shoot without my flash indoors or out doors it just looks ooof does anyone else have this problem..i just cant seam to figure it out
I mentioned it to the canon rep and all he said was umph......
Sadly I think the 1D3 has become scapegoat for every out of focus image downloaded off a CF card. Much like the upcoming election, I can't wait until all of this passes...

Assuming it's not user error, your camera is defective and should be sent to Canon Service immediately.

Shouldn't this whole thread be moved to DPR?
Geez. People can have a difference of opinion without it being labeled DPR.
I am trying to make a decsion now. I pre-ordered a 1D Mark III when they were announced but cancelled when the AF issues surfaced and bought a 1D mark IIN instead.
Now I am looking for a backup to or replacement of my 1D Mark IIN as primary. I was very unhappy to have to have had to make such a decision - I had hoped a 1D Mark III could last me a long while in terms of IQ and ability to capture action. I shoot wildlife at 400-700mm and action so I want a high frame rate and fine detail IQ. I am leery of the 1D Mark III, but don't see any viable Canon alternatives (50d or 5D mark II). So I am thinking of a gradual shift to Nikon d300 or D3, though it would be very costly because of the long glass, and I might have to give up bird photgraphy for a while.

Any sage advice?

Being that you asked, Wait until Feb and PMA before making any decisions.
Yep GeneO, wait for PMA announcements. I'm sure 1D III will be replaced. it'll be 2 yo, and I'm sure Canon wants to get it's newest tech into the 1 series ASAP and leave behind the 1D III fiasco.
