p.1 #1 · LX3 or D-Lux 4, which would you buy?

So I'm looking to get one of these cameras in the relatively near future (I want to have a decent compact camera before my trip this spring.)

I get a discount on both Panasonic and Leica gear (convenient!) through work and I can't really decide on which to buy.

I know internally they are basically the same camera, but will the Leica's files look any better, really? I think it may almost come down to a cosmetic level. The Leica clearly wins the beauty contest, and with that hand-grip it honestly looks perfect to me. However it would cost me a clear $400+ more to get the D-Lux 4 where I can get the LX3, the Leather half-case and the viewfinder for under $600 (I'd get just the camera first then worry about accessories later.)

Is resale value going to be THAT much different? Sure, on my dSLR bodies I'm concerned with resale, but I don't seem to care that much with pocket cameras, I usually give them to my dad when I've moved on!

I'm just curious to those that are interested in these cameras which one you'd buy and why? (Even if it is just because of cosmetics, let's hear your reasons!)

Get the Panisonic--same camera, good price, and it feels great in your hands as well. I don't think looks should ever be the reason to get a camera.

Like I said, price wise it sure is a good deal.

I'm a Leica junkie, but couldn't justify the difference. While the older Lumix models were pretty homely, Panasonic has closed the design gap. The picture quality and feature set of the respective Panasonic/Leica models are essentially the same - the processing engine is identical, after all. I just bought the FX150 (sibling of the LX3). Really nice build (battery door excepted).

+1 for the LX3. Fantastic files for a compact and feels very good in the hand.

+2 for the Panny. I'm very pleasantly surprised and had it not been for Kit's thread I probably wouldn't have given the LX 3 a go. The feel of the little cam in the hand is great with the little grip.

Looks like I'm going to go against the popular wisdom here. I'd go for the D-Lux 4. I think design is an important reason and good design should be rewarded when possible. I'd get it without the grip which adds more bulk for arguable utility. In most countries you get a longer guarantee and Capture 1 V4 software though that doesn't really make up the cost difference. I also believe that the D-Lux resale value is better. I actually bought an LX3 as a present for someone two days ago and am now regretting it because I find the D-Lux 4 is already available on the B+H site! E-Bay sale coming up :-) ?
