Canon choose to follow its old strategy... Put an awesome sensor in a crappy xxD body (regarding AF, FPS, weathersealing). Let's see where that is going to lead them with Nikon and Sony breathing in their necks

You know what though? I have made my money back on that crappy 5D body 20x over at the $3000 price. Mainly shooting weddings over the last couple of years. I'd say the new body (if it performs well) will be a winner among the low-light wedding shooters. And that is a very large segment of the current 5D owners. I think it's smart on their part. Sure it would be nice to have a 1DsMKIII (or feature set)... but for most, a pair of 5D's (or 5D MKII's) for less than the price of a single 1DsMKIII will work out very nice in this particular market.

I do think that almost twice the megapixels, twice the ISO, sensor cleaning, HD 1080P video, Live View, much improved LCD, AF MicroAdjustments, 14bit RAW, Highlight Tone Priority, Auto ISO, UDMA, additional custom modes and at a lower introductory price are definitely more than typical improvements from Canon... (i.e., 20D -> 30D, 1DMKII -> 1DMKIIN, etc...)

Anyway... I think its a fine sounding camera for $2699. Would I like the additional features mentioned in this thread that it's lacking? Sure....but not at a premium.

This is nearly exactly what I thought it would be...(minus the 1080P video)...which is a significant improvement over existing 3yr old FF camera, but that doesn't completely cannibalize their flagship FF consumer base. It's not all things for all people, but it fits a smart strategy on Canon's part IMHO. And I don't say that lightly...being a disgruntled MKIII owner since July 07.

Interested to see it first hand in November.

Take care,

I noticed that dpreview originally stated that they were going to provide a hands on preview later in the day, but after a few minutes they deleted that bit.

"AF on" button turns on AF while it is pressed (set in CF menu). After releasing, the AF remains set at that point Set AF on a spot where what you want to shot is or will be and then shoot. Really helps if what you are shooting is moving around in and out of the cameras screen's focus area as in during an airshow.

Image quality: most likely best out there, hands down. Good resolution at iso 100 (or 50), low iso noise up to iso6400 or something like that

build quality: Good and sturdy like the old 5d, the 20/30/40/50d I guess, but still under par compared to competition, it would cost canon §20 in rubber gaskets to sport a more functional camera for _many_ of us.

AF: hard to tell, if it is 9 cross type sensors, it might prove to be a more improved and better af then we think, if it is exactly the same as the old 5d, some

That's a good call. You may be correct.

I'm also intrigued by the "AF on" button. Does that have something to do with AF and video, or is it a new still-pic function?

(this is a LOT more fun than the rumors thread! )

AF-ON is nothing more than a back AF button just like on the current 1D MKIII's. It can be switched between the * button as well, if you prefer that.

Oh and yes.. the Print button is now the Live View button as I understand it.

FWIW, Canon Australia's specifications page and 5D MkII brochure state the AF points as "9 cross type + 6 assist". Optional accessories include "All EF lenses" (no mention of EF-S there).

Not true for Canon USA. Check this thread.
Both Canon USA and Canon Japan say 1 cross-type.

Hope they are wrong though.

Wow, the IQ in those videos are way better than I thought they would be. Awesome secondary feature.

word is that they are using h.264! at 38Mb/s!
that's like 2x rate of good camcorders I think.
and h.264 is best there is.
even blurays are usually not above 38/s
then again they are also slowly and carefully mastered and this will be done in realtime on a consumer chip so it onbviously won't be compressing as carefully or as well, but it should be a breakthrough for consumer level work.

IT seems that the gaskets may be on the green portion as well. The green seems to high light some major water problems (where the two halves meet, and the dial).

Finally I read some sense after all the negativity.

Same megapixel count as the 1Ds3 with better IQ according to Canon for less than half the price and everybody's whining? You've GOT to be kidding me...

List price UK 2300. Ouch.

I'm not an expert in this area, but canon's recent model releases do seem a little underwhelming. The 1000D (forgotten about since everyone was expecting a 5D II) actually appears to be a downgrade relative to the 400D it replaced, and the 5D II here is missing features like weather sealing, that many customers are wanting and the competition provides. Hopefully the image quality is class-leading, so the technical omissions can be forgiven.

The 400D's successor is the 450D and this new 5D has weather sealing and for that I quote Dpreview.
Commpact, lightweight with environmental protection, EOS 5D successor boasts a newly designed Canon CMOS sensor, with ISO sensitivity up to 25,600 for

The price will go down in no time I reckon

This camera is fantastic.

I know there are those sitting by their computers in their bedrooms who think they are going to force Canon to do better as a direct result their rants. Remember this though if the ranting is absurd and silly then it won't have any effect whatsoever.

Unfortunately most of the negative comments here are just that.

The 5D is a fantastic camera, the 5D2 a better one with possibly the best image quality of any dslr currently on the market.

This camera will sell extremely well and proudly carry the torch passed on by it's predecessor.

Yep.. they definitely both state 9 Crosstype. I guess time will tell which is accurate.

Yeah, I already picked up upon the upgraded sensor thingy... If true, it still remains to be seen how much IQ is different from the 1Ds3. But as I already said, it is not just about IQ if you shoot anything else beside landscapes/studio work. If AF is not accurate enough, you won't be getting the most out of the 21MP + new sensor tech. And I still don't see the point of putting over the top high ISO's on a landscape/studio cam. Maybe for weddings, but who needs 21MP for weddings. Besides that, it seems the overall sluggishness

yeah, it does seem bizarre when for like $300 more they could've made it totally responsive and made people utterly forget about the D700 (and even the D800 would just be lucky ot match it at least a year later). So very bizarre to me.

And where is the problem with that?

They did that with the original 5D and it is still a fantastic camera even after being on the market 3 years. I think that there is scope for a camera to fit between the 5D and the 1Ds in the Canon range, but I think they made the right move to not alienate the existing 5D owners or the 5D wannabees.

The money is in the low price ranged cameras that move out the door by the truck load and the 5D II is still the "budget" FF camera. Had they built it

Like I said earlier... AF accuracy is very important when shooting 21MP's. Weathersealing is important when you have to get the shot when it rains. Slow responsiveness (shutterlag, FPS, AF -?-) makes shooting a less enjoyable experience and could mean you loose a shot. Other than that , there are no problems... None that I can think off right now anyway. Don't get me wrong... If I were a landscape shooter, I would be jumping in the air right now. Great sensor, easy MF with LiveView and the new Zeiss 21mm and Canon 24mm on top of that...

$2699 is €1.896,8303 :-)
Adding our 19% VAT means € 2.257,23 thats still € 242 more than US customers have to pay ;-)

I think we discussed that so many times before. Europe is afaIk the bigest market for DSLRs. And prices are done by/for markets. Why should they do a lower price?

Its still fine.

it's like the one on the 40D/50D you can set it to control various things in various ways.

one thing is that when in liveview AF doesn;t ccour unless you press this button

you can also use it to starts or stop AF and so on for regular shooting too.
