Thanks for the welcome. I am having so much EOSfun here!

Looks like the new 5D's AWB is as crap as the present model. They just haven't bothered have they.
Is there another digital EOS that has better WB? I'm asking genuinely as I have no idea. If I know I'm going into tricky lighting I always shoot a white wall (or grey card) and do custom WB off of that shot anyway.
That brings me to another topic...
Were people honestly expecting a D700 with 24Mp, high def video, full weather sealing and EF-lens compatibility for the same price point as a 5D?
Way I see it is:
We get 21Mp instead of high frame rate
We get hd video instead of faster AF
We get weather sealing (albeit partial but adequate) as does the D700
Basically two features traded off, after seeing the HD video samples I'm actually interested but not amazed... however my 5D focuses fast enough for me. the 21Mp provided it's sharp with the new filters over the sensor are of interest to me for very large enlargements of landscapes, I don't consider this a sport camera, that is the part of the market the 1D (and to a lesser extent 1Ds) occupies. So we get two extras and lose two features not really aimed at this target market.
Sure some people are going to be annoyed their be all and end all camera wasn't released, but essentially that would just be a compact version of the 1DsIII with some updates like the LCD wouldn't it.
Neither Canon nor Nikon are going to release a top of the range camera at a lower pricepoint just because it lacks a battery grip. Nikon have already canibalised a lot of their D3 sales with the D700 to try and grab those serious-amateurs without a lot of EOS glass who were waiting for a 5D replacement, Canon's decisions are all very logical to me and as much as some people hate it, this is business. I guess that engineer doesn't realise that a product alone does not yield success for the business and it has to be designed and incorporated into a RANGE not as the only thing the company ever made just because it's what he worked on.

looks noise free, as expected. greatUnfortunately I think noise is only half the picture. What bothers me is that the pictures don't look that great at all color wise, it could be the AWB or the lack of dynamic range. In addition there is a great deal of chroma noise that is clearly visible even in the down-res'd image. I don't know what it is but I loved my 5d's color rendition and dynamic range, and especially how smooth everything looked.
I think many of us are just a bit surprised as the least they could have done is put the 40d's 9 cross type in there. Instead they kept the old, 3 year old AF system in there.
I would have also like to see an increase in frame rate when shooting in lower resolutions. That would be convenient and nice. You figure, the frame rate is only so high because the data that has to be processed is immense.

Canon Engineer admits being held back by Marketing Team
I don't see a "Canon engineer" quoted anywhere in that story. Nor is there even a Canon engineer paraphrased in that story. There is nothing in that story that indicates what actual Canon engineers think.
It says repeatedly "Canon employee," who could be anybody.
From the article: Although no formal testing has been done on the new model yet, judging by the spec and technology used, it just seems to be as good or as bad as the competition - not beating them by a mile (which we used to)."
This must have been said by someone totally removed from the R&D process, if he thinks his company has fielded a new device without any formal testing. An actual Canon imaging division engineer would never have made that statement.
Any 800, 1600, 3200 50, 12800, 25,600 iso well exposed & properly focused samples available for us to see, or are those awful samples all we are able to see right now?
I disagree that the 5D's AWB is crap. On the contrary, I think it's exceptionally good. On the other hand I think the D700's AWB sucks - based on the images I have seen on the internet. I believe generally Canon's AWB is more accurate than Nikon's.

As much as I like to get the EOSfun out of Canon, I have to say Nikon's AWB is at least as good. Especially under Tungsten Nikon's AWB seems to be more 'neutral'. I have found the way people like Canon or Nikon colour rendering is for a great part a matter of taste, because objectively the differences are relatively small and careful chosen compromises by Canon and Nikon engineers.
