For the Record 5DII has manual exposure control that works live and also during the video recording just check the 2 knobs and you will understand what I mean. For the focus well we know that ENG viewfinders are BW just to control best way the focus. Also the focus mechanism for the ENG lens are smooth just for the smooth operation. Even if you attach a small monitor to control your view it will be not so easy to work with such a stack of equipment that lacks so much the versability of a camcorder but for 2000Euros its still a bargain. (I am editing my first Athens video all made by 5D MarkII) ...Show more →
Not certain what you mean by checking the knobs? There is exposure compensation and exposure lock. But unfortunately you can not manually adjust the aperture, shutter and ISO while in video mode. It is all done for you automatically regardless of how you setup the camera. There are workarounds to trick the auto-exposure, but kind of kludgy.
I plan to shoot video with the 5D2 much like a film. So it'll be locked down on tripod with the action and movement within the frame/scene. Hand holding like a camcorder is not a requirement for me, but being able to focus sure is.
Yep.. I still have one of my Panasonic ENG cameras (with Canon lens).. Love that B/W viewfinder. I can't wait to see your Athens video. I'll be sure and show my grandmother, she'll love it...Think it's been over 20yrs since she's been back to Greece.

I am here, what do you need me for in this ridiculous long thread? I can't find anything here anymore. IMHO it's time to unstick and let various 5D2 threads live on their own.
Anyway, aren't you guys satisfied with the product that I mentioned before Photokina? ... To me it's great EOSfun for the money. The resolution of an 1DsmkIII sensor in an amateur box. But as a 1D series addicted it's not my camera; If I were tight on budget and could not afford an 1DsIII I would buy that 5D2 in a heartbeat. It's the best EOSfun ever for the serious amateur photographer....Show more →
Think it works quite well for the serious pro photographer too personally.

as i explained in the post, i upscaled the mark i image to match the mark ii image because it would best imitate the real world scenario where i frequently upscale anyway to fit images onto a massive album spread.
However you almost always leave it set to manual and if you want auto focus you hit a button on the lens that enables autofocus only while you hold in the button.
Also all broadcast zooms are parfocal, so that you can zoom in, focus and then zoom out and hold focus.
Nearly all (if not all) broadcast viewfinders are now colour.
Black and white viewfinders went out of fashion years ago.
The latest viewfinders (like on the Sony F35 and F23) are LCD.
The cost of a broadcast viewfinder alone, leave alone the body, is many, many times the cost of a 5D MK II.

Good info. The last ENG camera I owned was back around 2001... B/W viewfinder with Peaking controls that I loved...SO MUCH easier to focus with. And yes, they do have AF...but as mentioned...zoom...focus and recompose. I have never once used a color viewfinder in an ENG. camera...probably since I got out of the biz awhile back and they were too dang expensive. I did have an LCD mounted on top that I could view in color when I had it mounted on a tripod.
My Canon 19x zoom was twice the cost of the 5D2 too...
