The 5D looks pretty good in terms of noise. The 5D II is not that much better.

OK guys, here we start the engines.

Pop Photo did a review of the 5D mkII. I was in such a rush to post the link, I didn't even read it yet!

But their sub-head is:

Resistance is futile.

Hmmm, I'm getting some idea of what it says.

I am happy to say my 5D II is now in my hands, batterie charged and the first shot taken with the 50mm f1.4. Controls are fine and quite simple to find the LCD is brilliant
a real joy. My favorite store here ( Australia ) did the right thing and honored my order at the price quoted, they had four to sell no more until the new year.
This will be a busy weekend for me I am sure you all understand.

"The 5D-era AF, however, is no longer competitive...

In low light, the Canon is downright sluggish, and in extremely low light (EV -1 and -2), it's inconsistent and sometimes fails to focus.

...the 5D Mark II's old-fashioned AF system can't keep up with the cutting-edge imaging power."

this to me says 'studio and landscape camera.'

Croydon Camera House ( Vic.) I placed the order some two month ago $ 4000.00 Au. If you are still waiting I hope it will not be too long. A bit early to say but this is my first FF and so far I am impressed.
Cheers Manfred

Just wanted to let you guys know that I just picked up a 5D MKII from Camera Land NY. As of 8:10AM this morning, it looked like they had at least 2-3 kits and bodies in stock. Very excited to try it out over the weekend!

I just popped in the battery of my brand new de-bundled 5D Mark II and the thing screams good build quality. Though I do notice the smudge when all AF points in the viewfinder are on. Is this normal or do I bring it to Canon to have serviced?

DId you see this thread on the subject? https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/714109/0?keyword=defective#6446835
Short answer: The smudge is "normal." You can send it in to Canon, but they might not do anything about it. If I were you, I'd wait to see how the "black dots" issue resolves first. You might be sending it in to Canon anyway...

Not to despair....the ancient AF of the 5D2 probably just means that Canon will update the 5D2 in something closer to 18 months instead of 36 as they did for the original 5D.

So the Mk3 would have the AF from the 1Ds3, and would probably also fix the black dot problem.

Thanks for the lead CMOS but I think with my shooting style it wouldn't matter. I did some test shots in a barely lit room at H2 and... awful but 6400's pretty useful though

If by smudge you mean the red internal reflection of the focusing LCD, than that happens in almost every Canon DSLR. In certain conditions and focus points I can make it occur in a 5DMK1, 1DMK2, and XT.

The 5D2 autofocus is quite chipper compared to a Mamiya or Hasselblad.

I don't know how it's being marketed elsewhere, but Canon USA is marketing the 5D2 to the people who are otherwise in the market for ~20mp digital backs. The 5D2 is extremely competitive in that market.
