I thought I'd throw this out there - if anyone wants some free hosting for their 5D2 samples (images/video) just let me know. I have well over a TB of transfer I never use each month on my dedicated server.

Yeah, I was going to say, pretty blurry- was this a long exposure? What ISO?

ISO 100, 4 seconds. Download the whole picture with that link on the upper left. Does look a little muddy, might just be the lens, because I've seen other examples that are much clearer.

So, what does everyone think the prices are going to be like in about a month? I would really hate to buy one at retail then find them selling for $200 less (of course).

Less?...not likely for at least 6 months is my humble guess. In the short term, much more in fact. It won't be as bad as the Wii is (artificially limited supply due to tons of stupid resellers) but you'll see them on ebay and more than likely above MSRP.

I have a like new 40D that I waited to list on Craigslist for a couple of weeks and it is down at least $25, maybe $50. In addition, I think release cycles are going to come down. It would not surprise me to see the Mark III out a year from now or so. Further depressing prices.

I have one on order (in first batch, whatever that means) ... I got $210 off ... so you won't have to wait too long to see your $200 off. I expect to see these discounted by as much as $500 within six months. Probably $350 - $400 within 60 days. I picked up my 50D for $370 off within the first month it was available. The good old days of bodies holding their value seems to be gone. Early adopters are probably going to be punished buying at full retail going forward (not picking on anyone, like I said I have one on order ... just setting realistic expectations).

If you have good credit, pick the Credit card that has the lowest interest rate on it for about 6 months or so and use that, or buy it on Ebay and use their instant credit payment plans, or wait a few weeks, buy it on Amazon and use their payments. Also if you could wait a month, both Circuit City and Best Buy should carry it & usually they offer some no interest for 6 months thing

onecall.com and amazon.com both give you 12 months interest free (but, I think you may need to make small payments ... can't remember because I just divide the amount up and put it on auto bill pay).

AI servo focusing speed a very brief and probably faulty test 5DMkII vs. 50D

got to quickly point it back and forth (using 135L) at two different distances went back and forth as fast as I could (switching target each time it locked on) and seemed like I could do 30 switches in 20 seconds on the 50D and....
about 30 swtiches in 20 seconds on the 5DMkII.

oh it did take a 20D about 30 seconds to do the same thing, the 20D hesistated a few times seeming to have trouble with the lighting, maybe under brighter lighting it would've timed more similarly.

so just perhaps the AI Servo won't be as sloth slow as feared and maybe it is similar to 50D speed??

Anyway, it was a weird test and the 135L is not the single fastest focuser and it was in farily close range (so perhaps the lens was limiting the cams here and brought differences in bodies even?) under poor lighting so maybe on the sports field with a 300 2.8 results would be different, but at the least, it didn't seem to fail under this test, FW, if anything, IW.

but DO NOT take this as a statement that the 5DMkII can AI Servo as fast or as 'well' as the 50D, but it does at least still leave open hope, in fact, one could hope it would do even better.

Those are not very good shots at all. Something wrong with the lighting . They just don't look good.

I ordered mine awhile ago, september. But I order all my camera gear from there and they have the best service I've ever experience and everything you buy is 12 months same as cash and you do have to make monthly payments.

i don't think you should expect much better than the 1dMKIII at the pixel level, the tech was too good already for a major revolution, but with the larger sensor area, it should end up better noise per IMAGE.

I don't think even scaled down to 10mpx would be better than the 1dmk3. The 1dsmk3 comes close to 1dmk3 but the shadows are still not as smooth and DR is worse.

Remember, all the shots are handheld . . . nothing scientific here. I was probably shaking with the anticipation of the new toy. However, to me, if you compare ISO6400 here, I think it's much better than ISO1600 on the Mark I and maybe on par with ISO800 versus the mark I. That's a 4-8 fold increase in sensitivity. This is not a scientific test whatsoever but I see how much this camera has to offer.

Um no, that's not even as good as my XSi @ 1600... so it's surely not better than the mark 1 @ 1600 or even 800.

Yes, I want a Mkii if it turns out to be any good

I wonder PP/raw converter he used

Honestly, if I was one of the fortunate few who got their hands on a 5DII this week, there's no way I would post examples, given the behavior of some people around here. The poor guys who've given in to the pressure to post examples are getting dragged through the mud for not taking hours to process each shot to ensure that all of the fence-sitters and worry-warts have all of their irrational fears allayed.

Some people are just going to have to deal with the fact that they won't be satisfied until they hold the camera in their own hands, shoot the shots themselves, process the shots themselves, post the shots themselves (or not). And they still won't really be happy - they'll be forever taping dollar bills to walls, testing and micro-adjusting every lens they own on a weekly basis, as the world keeps on turning, and other people are out there taking great pictures.

I'm moving up from a 40D (had a 20D until late Spring), and I'm pretty certain the 5DII is going to be brilliant. I'm not going to compare it to $4k-8k cameras, I'm not going to peep at all 21 million pixels of every shot. I'm going to shoot, and I'm going to enjoy it. I'm going to shoot some video, watch what I shoot, learn from my mistakes, and try to get better. This is a tool that packs more possibility into a smaller package than any of us can really comprehend - I'm going to start with that as my base assumption, and see what it lets me do.

rnb2 - Thank you. Well said. And when you get your 5DII you will NOT be sorry. I was wondering if I would regret posting some images or opening up full rez images on my flickr stream. I choose to ignore the pixel peeping and instead admire my work and the work of others in the form of large prints matted and framed . . . coming from their Mark IIs.

My thoughts exactly. I'm upgrading from a 30D, which was my first DSLR having shot nothing but B&W film before the 30D. I can't wait to get back to FF camera. I would have been happy with 16MP so the 21MP is bonus, plus at least 2 stop increase in ISO, 1080 HD video! I can't wait to put this camera to work. I won't have to rely so heavily on my fast lens to get the picture I want.

Cheers
