Is it true that Americans have to pay an import customs/duty tax on cameras like these from Hong Kong? I called Digitalrev in Hong Kong, and the girl on the phone said "some" Americans have reported having to pay up to 20% in customs fees.

I have no idea if this is true. Can anyone help here?

In Canada, they collect duty and taxes when you go pick up the package - we call "clear custom". For us, we pay taxes 5% GST and 8% sales tax (in Ontario). Now I know Camera Lens are duty free here but not sure if Camera body is duty free or not. Not sure how it works in the US.

well, no there were not for me. I think he set it up so only people with flickr accounts and logged in can access the larger sizes or something, from what I gather from a few of the comments.

and it's true you can't judge anything from pics that tiny, like 100x80, despite what anyone here may say.

and the "anyway, have fun tomorrow" was not snot-ass or sarcastic, it was serious.
i was wishing him fun with his new cam.

and no i don't think a 20D has the same noise and yes I may get a 5dmkii myself.

I canceled my Adorama 5D MKII kit pre-order (9/21). Hope it helps some of you.

I just haven't seen a full size image from a 5D Mark II that I was wowed by at any ISO - and I have been looking. A lot of shots seem to have a hazy over-processed look to them when viewed at 100% in Photoshop, possibly due to too much NR like this one:

DPR image

Here is a 100% crop from Rob Martin's pbase page that has so many issues that it isn't worth listing:

100% crop

Maybe it is due to the lack of raw images from

perhaps you will be proven correct in the end, but I seriously would not be worried, for whatever none of the first samples from any canon cam every seem to look that great and then magically a few weeks later you see stunning shot after shot.

Would someone please identify exactly what's wrong/bad about the 100% crop of the "bridnest"? I am not a professional and did not find anything jump out at me when viewing the crop at my LCD.

thanks,

Photo Service in Montreal received 3 bodies and is "delivering" them today. One would have been mine but I gave up my 1st place (for 5th) when I switched to a kit a month ago. They tell me more are coming and were of the opinion that deliveries would be no worse than when the 1DMIII began shipping here in Canada (deliveries were about 2 units per week at the beginning).

Hey, I know a few of you wanted to see some images full rez. I opened up my flickr account so that anyone can view original images. Mind you, I typically don't upload the original sizes. However, in response to some of you, here are some images. Just click on the original size:

I am a 77 yr. old hobby photographer presently using a 5D I. I shoot raw an due to my eye sight & dim info quality cannot properly read the info in the view finder. This subject has been voiced in several of the forums. For this reason mainly I am considering the 5d MK II. Would you be so kind to tell me your opinion on the brightness of the new 5d MK II info in the viewfinder. Thank you
Lee Smith

Lsmith - I can't say I've done a very diligent comaparison. However, if I compare the 5D I to the 5D II, there may be a slight difference with the 5DII being the brighter of the two. This appears to be only a slight difference to me. However, the 5D II has Live View and a huge bright beautiful LCD screen. It might be to your advantage since the LCD brightness can be adjusted so that you wouldn't need to use the viewfinder. The LCD on the 5D II is much larger and higher resolution than the 5D I.

Using a fast prime lens helps, as the wider aperture means more light in the VF. Also, you may want to consider an extra bright focussing screen - maybe a screen from Brightscreen - although they are kind of expensive.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but what were your noise reduction settings for those pictures?

not that everyone cares about the video feature, but I was rather surprised that the D3x has no video, so nikon still doesn't have a decent video mode worked out yet. I assume the D800 still would, but not 100% sure now and perhaps that model is farther out release, maybe 18-20 months and not 10 months.

anwyay, back to strictly 5dmkii stuff....

well actually, the $4999 for the D3x does directly relate to canon since you have to figure the 1dsmkiii will be selling for maybe $4500 before too long at all now and the 1dmkiii maybe be down to $3300 shortly too.

A very limited number arrived in the shops. I know one lad with one now and have heard of others with them.

If you fancy risking it the number for Conns (€2413) (very appropriately named shop) is +353 1 677 7179 and for ISS (€2599) is +353 1 478 2520. These prices are inclusive of 21% VAT. If you're a registered trader you can get this back.

The lad I know with it said he got it for €1800 excl VAT from ISS. Both are within walking distance in Dublin city centre.

I'm not sure do these guys reserve things but calling them can't do any harm. I'll be waiting a bit til I have the cash handy myself.

Best of luck.
