I wanted to share that I also got a call from Adorama and the rep said my camera will ship next Monday. No replacement batteries available yet. I pre-ordered on 9/18 around 10:00am Eastern time.

I can't stand the wait.:}

Isnt it amazing that Canon has a custom function to set the direction of the dial or wheel for increasing or decreasing aperture or shutter but NOT the incredibly popular custom function of choosing the function of the dial or wheel in manual exposure mode. For that, you must choose a 1d model.

Its amazing that they would tweak the sw to that extent, similar to limiting the exposure compensation to +- 2 stops. Its petty stuff.

I just called Adorama about my 5D II pre-order (I pre-ordered it on 9/18 morning) and the rep told me that it will be shipped next Monday. Can't wait...

I don't think as many as 1/3 would cancel their pre-orders. When you pre-order, you have to give your credit card details to the merchant. The merchant is not obliged to ask you if you are still interested in the item even after a few weeks have passed. As long as you have not cancelled your pre-order, they can bill your credit card and then ship the camera to you ... and notify you of the shipment afterwards. Sure, you can return the item to them but (a) it will cost you to ship the item back, and (b) in some cases you may have to pay a restocking fee.

Meaning, most people who pre-order an item will be prepared to go through with it and have their order billed and shipped without any advance warning. If you wish to cancel your pre-order you should do it before they bill and ship the item to you.

I think typically 1/3 of pre-orders are canceled or the retailer can't get a hold of the person interested.

I'm number 491 and Adorama just contacted me back saying they *may* be able to fill most pre-orders by 2nd week of December based upon the rumors they hear. However, they confirmed I will NOT get mine from them next week.

Just a thought for those just now getting serious about the 5DII. You will get the 5DII a lot faster from a small shop. There will be a few that are even unsold from the initial shipment.
The first week the 5D was released I went in a photo shop in Jackson Hole and they had two unsold units. I know some people waited three months after the 5D release to come to the top of the list at some big stores.

What is the name of the new 5D video forum? I visited it but can't find it. Thanks

Anyone know of decent external mic since it appears that mechanical noise from the camera and/or lens will be probably be noticeable when using the internal mic? Maybe a directional mic that mounts on the hot shoe? I've seen a lot of posts for external setups with their own storage, but those are expensive. Basically looking for something with decent audio when capturing footage for something like my kids' birthday parties. Doesn’t make sense to have dazzling video with mediocre audio.

Dang, I can already see this thing costing more and more money. It's bad enough that I got bit by the L bug. I can't imagine how much new computer and related equipment is going to cost just to process 1080p video at a reasonable speed!!

You can say that again. I've had to buy a Kirk video panning grip, and a new L-bracket from RRS. Will probably have to replace/upgrade my computer so I have the necessary RAM and speed to handle these huge files, plus a 1TB external hard drive, extra batteries ($100 each!), etc.

1TB? Try 10 1TB drives!

I have a Rode VideoMic from the time I spent with an HD camcorder - always worked quite well, and mounts right on the hotshoe. Powered by a 9 volt battery. It's mono rather than stereo, but the quality is very good. Might be a bit large if you're shooting with a short lens.

For storage, seriously consider a Drobo. While it's pricey ($500 without any drives), its flexibility is awesome. Basically, unlike other external RAID setups, you can mix-and-match any drives you want, and can upgrade any one drive on-the-fly, while it's running - just pull the small drive you want to replace, and insert the new big drive. It will rebuild as you work.

The best part is that you can stay in the GB/$ sweet spot as you expand capacity - as drives are always coming down in price, you can buy what you need right now, without paying the premium for the top end of current capacity. With 500GB drives very cheap right now, you can buy four of them, and have about 1.4TB after formatting (you lose your largest drive to data protection). If that gets tight in the future, you can start buying (now cheap) 750GB/1TB drives to expand capacity. If you need more capacity in 3-4 years, start buying 2TB drives, etc.

My Drobo has a mix of 4 drives - 2 x 500GB, 1 x 320GB, and 1 x 250GB - from different manufacturers and running at different speeds, and it runs like a champ (total capacity is just under 1TB). It's not the fastest external enclosure (it has USB2 and Firewire 800 connections, with an optional extra to make it a network drive), but for the peace of mind and flexibility, it's a dream.

Azden -- 2 channel wireless Lavaliere or a Sennheiser ME-66 boom. This camera alone is worth it for 1080P video. Go find a 1080P video camera for under $3K - none.
