Only if you pre-ordered really early. Unless all the people here are blowing smoke.

You mean it was a serious question? Did it occur to you to do some reading?

Yes, it was. 3100 posts isn't what I call light reading. I apologize.

Yes. Thus called "invisible".

If Canon wait much longer the 5D IIn will be announced at PMA.

I remember all the shit people used to put on Nikon for these sorts of announcements.

Bizarre: a shop in Australia has put on their site an ad with the price listed as $3799 (US$2550) for the body alone. http://www.photocontinental.com.au/specials14.htm

I rang them, and they say the RRP is $4399, but "we don't do retail prices at Photocontinental".

They're expecting a shipment in two weeks, but that's sold out, and these ones are expected for delivery late December.

Sounds a bit too good to be true. I preordered at $4299 with 10% deposit at Fletchers. You'll hear all about it if they change the price. On the terms and conditions it's a layby with 42 days purchase window, but I got a verbal guarantee that the price was firm, regardless of what happened to currencies. Of course, they said, that's why you're putting down a deposit. I have no reason to doubt that they will honour their word, so hopefully I'll be paying $4299 in mid December for a new 5DII. More than happy with the price, considering the current colatility in forex.

It wasn't an in depth review. He wrote about what he was interested in, and what impressed him.

You see, the thing about these threads is that none of us actually KNOW anything.

The best way to find out, is to call a dealer, or even try Canon.

If they can't tell you, then we sure can't.

It gets better - two shops that I know of have got it at that price now (PRA just sent an email).

Just had a call from Michaels here in Melbourne.

It went basically like this.

---

Mic, good news - Canon has just released final pricing on the EOS 5Dmk2, and it's $4299. But we're setting the price at $3999, and they'll be here in a couple of weeks.

We've also got pricing on the kit, $5299 with the 24-105. Would you be interested in going up to the kit?

No, not really. I've got good lenses already. (28-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8L IS, etc)

Well, Canon are releasing a lot more kits than bodies, therefore I can't guarantee you a body in a couple of weeks, but if you want to go up to the kit, I can definitely do you one of them in a couple of weeks.

I'm not really interested in the kit.

Well, I can't get you a body until January.

Also, $3999 isn't that big a deal - PhotoContinental and PRA are doing the camera for less than $3800.Well, no. PC put the price up this afternoon, and PRA just sent the email an hour ago.

Oh, that must have been estimated pricing, we only got the price from Canon an hour ago.

Well, no. PC put the price up this afternoon, and PRA just sent the email an hour ago.

Hmmmmm, interesting. Thanks for that information, glad to know about it.

---

Sounds like blackmail to me, frankly.

Going in tomorrow to see the bloke who sold it to me initially, and we'll see what can be done.

Admittedly, the 24-105 would be a great walkaround lens on the FF body, but it was just the way they did it that annoyed me so much. And it retails here for $1400 or so, so the kit price is hardly compelling.

Just rang PRA in Perth and they tell me I can get a body by putting down a deposit tomorrow, as they'll split the lens/body combination and sell the lens separately, which is perfectly sensible.

Can't get back to Michaels now as they're shut. Will talk to them again in the morning.

Ahhh, what to do.

My friend Lloyd, from Diglloyd.com just did a comparison between the new Mamiya DL28 and the Sony a900.

While he'll have the report out later this week, he does say about the Sony a900:

"Potential Canon 5D Mark II users should not lose any sleep over the A900."

Yep, a pretty widely-held view from those who have used the Sony.

Maybe it's not too good to be true, then. Though you have to wonder how or why someone can sell something at $600 under RRP...

My guess is because they've got a fair bit of margin, and because Canon is kinda scared about the figures out today that showed a 21% drop in consumer confidence...

Ive been trying to order one of these in NZ and have found a couple of places that couldnt give me confirmed prices but said they would def be selling for $400 less than RRP.

Which by the way was initially estimated by Canon at NZ4300 (AU3760)
I highly doubt it wont go up a fair bit now though.

Perhaps after this initial scare, the dealers will offer more discounts.

It may just be a matter of waiting it out.

I don't know what the rush to be first is all about anyway. How is two or three months going to hurt anyone. Isn't what people have now serving the purpose?
