I would agree. From the images I've seen to date, the 5D Mkll appears to have lower noise than the original 5D both in 100% views at the pixel level, and even lower apparent noise when down-sampled to the 5D's pixel count.
Just to add to my comments above ... I like the 50D and appreciate the improvements that Canon has added over the 40D. I have a positive attitude about the camera. Sometimes in these discussions we lose track of the bigger picture.

Anyone seen this new 5D MKII video? Just amazing. This is a game changer, whether the hardcore photogs among us what to admit it or not...
Very cool. Yes in the right hands, the video feature is going to be a game changer and I suspect will make the quick-footed talented photographers a lot of money.
This is going to significantly increase the desirability of the 5D II. The forthcoming reviews should be very good too. I predict that demand will exceed supply for the first few months (and Vincent Laforet will be right on the money!) and the price is unlikely to drop for maybe 6 months. I am glad I pre-ordered one with Amazon on September 17!

I preordered from Amazon on September 17, too. Hope it's not too much longer to wait...
I don't know if this has been answered, but are you able to select the aperture you want when using the video mode? Or does the camera select aperture and ISO based on it's desired exposure? Can you manually expose during video? It would suck if you couldn't select the aperture you wanted when filming.
And please remember, that I'm talking about the 5D mkII. I had only responded to someone talking about what they thought about the 50D's performance as to how they thought it could relate to the 5D mkII.

For what it is worth ... my 50D arrived today and I ran a series of tests from ISO100 to ISO3200 on both the 50D and 40D using ACR 5.1 and RAW files. Just preliminary results, but I did not see any real difference between the noise in the 40D and 50D images when viewed at 100%.
Yeah, but you have 50% more pixels in the 50D image, so you have 50% more pixels per subject area, and since your per pixel noise is the same (as you report) you have less noise per duck / face / bookshelf.

Highlights look very blown out compared to what a good dedicated vid camera would do - resolution is one thing but if it can't capture a good dynamic range the video feature will never be anything other than a gimick.
is there contrast detect AF in video mode? I couldn't find it in the manual. Or only MF? I remember some of us discussing this when vince's video first came out.
B&H now has the 5d II kit with 24-104 as "Availability: Out of Stock"
Formerly, it was "Availability: Approx. Arrival Novermber"
(The 5d II body only is still "Availability: Approx. Arrival December")
Must be getting closer...
