You get metering with any lens- it's from the camera body - what you don't get with a manual lens is aperture control - you have to preset that on the lens which can mean rather a dark viewfinder.
I didnt even think about that...do the kenko tubes allow for auto focus and aperture changes? I ordered a set off ebay to go with the sigma 150 I ordered off here.

Yes Kenko tubes allow for AF and aperture control although the AF may be difficult due to the loss of light and narrow DOF. I'd always recommend MF for macro but especially when using extension tubes.
+ 1 (as if Brian wasn't definitive). AF + tubes is a no go. It will make your camera hunt, so the AF FEATURE works, but you never lock on anything. I saw a post in this forum that af does work well with some lenses (I seem to remember the 300 f2.8? and 70-200 2.8?).
i dont know anyone who does 1:1 with AF anyhow. it was more the metering i was after but if the AF extension and MF lens wont meter on my d40 then i'll stick to the pk13

Not quite sure what you mean here- it will meter but you will have to manually stop the lens down ie the aperture will not be auto.

depends a bit on the focal length of the macro lens, but lenses around 90 to 150mm will give you around 2:1 max mag with all the tubes.

The 150mm works pretty well with the full stack of Kenkos, except that the tubes sag a bit. I'd love to wrap a bit of sheet metal around them to kill all of the play. I use the tubes with a 100-300 f/4, but metering goes bye-bye with more than 36mm. From time to time I'll lose metering on my 60mm or 150mm, but remounting the lens usually fixes that.

brian V.hmm... ok currently with the pk13 and 55mm micro the camera does not meter at all, everything is manual (ie shutter speed, aperture and focus all set by me).
since the kenko tube has all the electronics tho will it meter for shutter speed? I know that the lens being a manual one i'll have to do aperture myself... does that make more sense?
ving - just try to use the camera in shutter priority for natural light or manual mode with flash- as I said the metering is in the camera body. Obviously you will need to shoot with the lens manually shut down to the aperture you want which makes the viewfinder a bit dark. This certainly works on canon bodies. I know at least some Nikon bodies can do peculiar things with flash control if they can't sense a lens (ie you can't use ttl). In this scenario with a manual lens it wouldn't make any difference if the ext tubes were electronic contact ones or not.
it doesnt work with the d40, d40x or d60 unfortunately. it states there is no lens connected and that i have to use manual mode. if the d40 body has nothing to communicate or connect with then it thinks there is nothing there... also meens no ttl with the flash...
hence me wondering about the extension tube... it has a mean with which to communicate with a d40 but i dont think it probablt wont do...
i probably need to ask a d40 user thathas tried this.

AF works fine for me with Kenko's tubes and Canon 50 f/1.4 .
