All this is great news, but I want my aperture ring!!!! A Zeiss is not a Zeiss without an aperture ring
Good call. I usually find it awkward now to use the finger dial to change aperture. Having an aperture ring would would make the ZE lenses like N-mount lenses.

Hopefully there will be a 21 version for ZF.
Yes, Rick, there will be, and it looks like it will be available before the ZE version by a few months. The news announcement actually shows the 21 in ZF mount.

Now that you guys mention it, I must agree. Up until a certain aperture, it's better to focus using the actual f-stop you will shoot with. That's the one technical advantage of old MF lenses.
Like rfkiii, I'm starting to view the ZF's more fondly.

Well, presumably, the lens wouldn't stop down at the ring is turned. You'd have to depress the DOF preview button for that. I'm assuming ZE lenses will work just like EF lenses with no AF.

What a conundrum!
The whole Nikon/Canon question is becoming very interesting now!

I'm glad I was correct about all this. I've eaten enough crow this year
And you won't have to give up your left nut at the same time!!!
Personally, I'm looking for an updated CZ 35/1.4 at some point in the future (or I can hope anyway.) It's a good day for Canon owners today with these announcements.
With or without aperture ring doesn't make any difference here. With auto-aperture stop-down, the lens would behave in the same way anyways. I just prefer to change the aperture on the lens like in the good old days rather than turning the wheel.
The problem with the DOF preview button is that it only works on pushed. Once you release the pressure, the aperture opens wide. I'm not sure if there is any way to make the DOF preview button close by one push, and open by another push.

What about just using the DOF preview?

Actually no, even if the lens had an aperture ring, it wouldn't allow you to focus stopped down unless you keep on holding down the DOF preview button.
My preference for an aperture ring is because I find more instinctive. I, like Sreven, find it awkward to change aperture on the camera.

I've been using the DoF Preview button a bit and I like your idea about adding a setting where pressing the DoF Preview button keeps it at the aperture (even when you've depressed the button) and pressing it again will shoot it wide open again.
After using adapted MF lenses exclusively for months, it's kind of a shock to use an AF lens in a mode other than Av, and all of a sudden realize that the photo I ended up taking has several times the depth-of-field more than what I was expecting. That, and poorer bokeh, from being stopped down.
They say the reason, why Zeiss is doing the ZE mount now, is that some Canon patents have expired and Zeiss is allowed to use the electronic interface now.

Also from this article- They are re-activating the 21mm Distagon of Contax legend! First in ZF and ZK, later ZE.
Auto aperture and EXIF are great, but given the fact that the new ZE would be 500EUR I think I will stick with my C/Y for a while. Same goes for the 85, the only interesting is the 21mm, but we will have to wait and see how it is doing against the C/Y version. But, let them come, I still have some C/Y lenses missing, so I hope prices on those will fall.
As many here, I am very happy about this release, but am a bit sad about the price.
To me, the lack of an aperture ring is not that much of a problem, since I almost never used one.
That 50 and 21 look very good to me, but may be hard to justify for me at that price...

As far as I understand, the prices are unverbindliche empfehlungspreise, or just recommended selling prices. The street prices imho should be very close to the ZF equivalents.
