p.1 #1 · #310 Twelve Soldiers Memorial

I can't believe I'm done on day 1 of this week's assignment! I got home from work, saw the new assignment, headed out after dinner for a sunset shoot and then stopped by in Charlie Lake, BC on the way home to shoot this memorial silhouetted against the post-sunset sky. I've been meaning to shoot it since it was erected earlier this year, but wasn't planning on a silhouette. It was erected to memorialize twelve US Army Corp of Engineers soldiers that drowned in a makeshift pontoon ferry accident, May 17, 1942, during the construction of the Alaska Highway. Full story HERE if you're interested.

Hi David,

What a wonderful and moving shot. You have done a fantastic job capturing this monument. The sky is fabulous, but the composition is so strong the sky does not overpower the shot, but just bringing the appropriate drama to the setting. I absolutely love it. Good luck this week, but I don't think you will need any luck.

p.1 #3 · #310 Twelve Soldiers Memorial

Hi Steve,

Thank you very much! Like I had stated, I wasn't initially planning on shooting this silhouette style, but with the theme in the back of my mind on the trip home I thought it would fit well. The more I think about it now, the after sunset sky suits the idea of the memorial with it's timely construction some 66 years later, like the closing of that chapter finally and the families can move on.

Cheers,
David
