You don't "just" get a FX sensor in a D3... You get high speed photography (9fps), blazing fast AF and an AMAZING 3D color metering system based on 1,005 pixels among many other things.

In the Sony, you basically get a FF sensor shooting at 5fps...

Not the same league, hence not the same price tag

But there's a resolution difference as well - the A900 is likely to handily outresolve the D3. Different tools for different requirements, and all that.

The reason the A900 costs $3k is because they forgot to put the $1k worth of image processing electronics Nikon puts in a D3, which is why I am more than 90% sure the end image quality of the A900 will be inferior to a D3 for most situations except where only resolution is improtant. And they also didn't put another $1k worth of sealing, build quality, ergonomics and to be honest, a A900 looks like a pig, the D3 is much better so that's worth at least $500.

Go ahead, if you want to, but you won't get me to pay $500 for the appearance of a camera! For that price I could get a new SB900, or TWO used SB800's.

$500 extra on a $5000 camera is not really that much, just 10% extra to get something that doesn't make you vomit when you look at it.

True, true... still would be very exciting to see a Nikon Medium Format whatever the price would be ah!

Modular body with adapters for existing Nikon F mount lenses though there will be three new lenses introduced. By changing the distance to the sensor you can create a larger image circle with exisiting Nikon glass. One target market is wedding and studio photographers while Nikon is already hinting at it for the WPPI show early next year. ISO 50 to 800 and new software for tethered and wireless shooting. New software for previewing and workflow with a blend of CaptureNX and CaptureOne Pro.

Would that even work? If you changed the distance, the lens wouldn't be able to focus right anymore - it would be a bit like adding extension tubes. Not to mention that the glass wasn't designed for that - I think resolution would fall off too.

I'm not an optical engineer, but I guess I don't see how that would work.

Doesn't give any schedule...

Hmmm could it be a micro 4/3?

I would love to see an affordable MF system from either Canon or Nikon but I think the chances are slim, but one can dream

You've made the assumption that the adapter does not have any optical elements...

Why are you comparing A900 and D3? D700 is the A900 competitor.

Okay, I'm a little confused. People have a HUGE problem with Canon's pricing...$8k for the top of the line camera. Now all of a sudden, if Nikon has a $10k camera, people are willing to sell their children to get their hands on it. I'm really confused now...What do you people want...or do you even know!!!

Apparently you are the one with the problem my friend.

An ad in Rangefinder magazine hints at this. It says WPII and Nikon will announce something very big at the show in Las Vegas in February.

Kodak has just rolled out a 48-X-36 sensor; perhaps Nikon is using that in a new line.

Whatever, it will be way beyond what I afford.

Actually the possibility of Nikon getting into Medium Format Digital is not too far fetched, as Nikon made lenses for the early Bronica MF cameras. If the large Nikon sensor does come to market, I would not be surprised if the camera body said "Bronica" on it and the digital back and lenses were marked "Nikon". Bronica has an established name in Medium Format, Nikon has an established name in 35mm, 6x6 and large format lenses, so this would make a lot of sense.

I would like to see a digital Bronica, in either ETR or SQ mount, lots of lenses available on the used market. As this would be a crop camera for either the 6x6 or 6x4.5 format, Nikon could market some new and improved wide angle lenses as currently the Bronica is limited to 40mm for the widest angle rectilinear lens.

You are comparing apples with pears. Canon's 8K 1DsIII is overpriced for a 35mm format camera. A hypothetical MF camera for 10K would be a very attractive price, given that current competing cameras are 20-30K.

By the way the 10K is just someone's speculation - Maybe it will be even cheaper!

No if Nikon is going to introduce a larger than FF camera it will be their own design, with possibly their own sensor but certainly with their own lenses

http://nikonrumors.com/2008/09/15/mx-lenses.aspx

I would love the camera to have the ability to tilt & shift with all lenses using a system similar to Hasselblad HTS 1.5
