I am considering stretching my budget and getting one of the Gitzo 1541 tripods but can't decide between the traveler or the mountaineer versions of those legs. The traveler legs are cool in that they fold up and can be much more compact, but I am wondering what you are giving up to get that flexibility. What benefits does the mountaineer have over the traveler?
I'll be primarily using the tripod backpacking/hiking and some traveling with my 5D and probably won't have any lenses bigger than my 70-200 2.8 on there.
The mountaineer is taller, and sturdier. The 70-200mm 2.8 will do better on the mountaineer. The Traveler is no slouch though. If you need to have a tripod that packs down to 14 inches, the traveler is your ticket.

The Mountaineer is a lot taller. And also more stable if you use them at the same lenght.
The only reason to get the traveller version is if you need to have a really small tripod when travelling. For about everything else, the Mountaineer is a better tripod.

A high quality tripod is money well spent.
I do agree, and that is why I ended up splurging and going for the 2541 Only $50 more than the 1541 and only 0.5 lbs heavier. I want the stability and knowledge I can use it for future larger setups. The lifetime warranty is what really helped justify the cost for me. It should arrive tomorrow!!!
