So, what is wrong with A900? Why should we wait for 5D II?

This one too brainiac :P at 100% it may look noisy, but I don't think it is THAT bad if you realize that 100% is quite a lot at 24 mpix.

If the Canon campaign is designed to heighten interest I'm afraid they're overdoing it. Boredom is rapidly setting in.

Two reasons. First is that the 5D2 is not far away.

More importantly is this camera already sucks at high ISO.

Why would you do it when high iso quality is such a major decision maker in the market? add that Canon and Nikon are making strides in that very area and this camera presumably hopes to compete with those cameras.

Check out the comparisons here:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM

Choose canon 1ds Mark III and sony alpha900, use the 1600

Is the difference, when taking resolution into the account, that large...? REALLY? Considering that this is a camera for almost 1/3 the price?

I did download some alpha 900 samples from dpreview and they are... painfully bad, particularly the high ISO noise IMHO.

Wow, I found the 1600 ISO one (this) very good (for the in-focus part...)

Check out the images from imaging-resource.com instead, they are way better imo. The review/preview is in general better!

Check it out!

The image they use in the link you provided does not show much shadow area.

Check the high iso images from the sony at dpreview and prepare to be disgusted.

All canon cameras are vastly better than this. The new 5d will likely be a similar price, similar megapixels and far better at high iso.

I like the grips holding. And the price. Thats it for now.
And now come out Canon! Give your bored, exited, hopefull trusting community what you promised. Define future photography new for us and all competitors!

The dpreview ones are halfway out of focus, they use in camera nr and are generally bad, check out the imaging resource pictures, and as long as BOTH images (that being a900 and d3 or 1ds III) use the same example, there is no problem in comparing?

I think people are a bit quick to jump to conclusions here. The a900 might not be the best high-iso camera out there, but it still beats most canon cameras in resolution, build quality, viewfinder etc. Stating that "this is no competition" is just a bit early, it might ring true, but we don't know.

I was just comparing these two images from the Sony 900 and 1Ds III:
Sony 900 Tower Bridge
1Ds III Tower Bridge

The 1Ds III image looks far better to me.

Yeah, the imaging-resource.com ISO100~400 samples look better than those on dpreview.com, albeit they were made on a more controlled environment. The high ISO samples are still awful however (very bad smearing).
The dpreview samples have more shadow areas, more diverse lighting and, thus, can show a bit more of what expect from the camera on different scenes/situations.
Anyways, competition is always good to keep Canon on its toes.

The links at Imaging Resource show that the A900 is pretty noisy. Compare the same images from a 5D to the A900 at ISO 800 or above. Nice to know the 5D can hold it own against the top of the line Sony.

I was starting to get wrapped up a little in the latest and greatest hype, hope and wait mode as well. Until I started printing and packaging my images for an upcoming show. As I studied my landscapes captured with my 5D, I came back to reality and just said 'wow'. This camera makes great images, sure I'd like a little more from the shadows, but all in all, this is a great camera and it still suits my needs just fine (pop up flash or not ) So, I've made peace with my photographic soul and will wait for the official announcement with interest, but not Christmas morning like anticipation. I'll keep popping into the rumors thread in the meantime as I think this is much more interesting than the threads we can expect after the announcement.
