Of course a 5D will be "better" than a 7D. But just like the 1D3 has lower resolution than the 5D, the 5D could have lower resolution than the 7D. The 1D3 even has lower resolution than the G10, and maybe even the 1D4 will have lower resolution.
But the 1D3 is more expensive because it is faster, more robust, etc. Similarly, the 5D could be more expensive than a supposed 7D by having better high-ISO performance, and other features, even if it has lower resolution. Makes sense to me, at least...
That might the case, but I'm going on the specs that were presented for the new 5D and they were hopeless compared to the 7D
5D will remain at 12 MP for those who want really good high-ISO performance (per pixel), and don't need higher resolution. Will maybe even stay at one DIGIC III and be quite low in price. But new software, dust removal, micro adjust, etc

I wouldn't buy this if the 7D were as you said.
The idea is that the 5D2 would have much better high-ISO performance (for example by having a low-voltage sensor). Makes sense to me, but perhaps you don't care so much about noise?

My expose was a bit short, of course...
You obviously haven't been paying attention to braniac, showing the myth of more megapixels and more noise and you have no faith that Canon won't deliver a camera with more MP than the 5D and lower noise.

Hey, I've even commented in brainiacs thread. But since I'm not an expert, I never made the mistake he talks about.
And of course Canon will be able to do that. In my scenario (which is just supposed to make sense, not necessarily to be likely), that would be the 3D.

I have my SET button programmed either for Review or Live View, depending which I need. LV is MLU plus LCD show - simply disregard the LCD show.
While I totally agree that the DP button is completely useless, I don't quite recognize why people simply can't get over it given that there are alternatives. Life is full of useless things, such as "wet floor" signs or "caution, coffee is hot" in the drive-thru. Besides, on the 50D the DP button _does_ have a new meaning, so chances are it will on the 5D2, too.
That does sound like an acceptable solution then. Although I'd think I'd still prefer to use the direct print button, since it's not in the middle of everything. And not to waste battery power. On the other hand, live view might be useful while the mirror is up.
But why do you think "wet floor" signs are useless?
Yes. It implies that Canon is aiming the camera at a much lower price point than the D700. That's appealing to those of us with only a finite amount of cold hard cash.
If a 5D replacement had professional grade AF system and weather sealing like the D700, then it will cost a *lot* more than the D700. The 21 million pixels will ensure do that. I'd rather have a $2200 camera in my hand, than a $4400 camera in my dreams.

I don't care much for the resolution and would rather have the AF and sealing, as well as faster frame rate.

There is going to be only one new camera basically:
21 MP
Digic IV
14 bits
4 FPS
New anti liazing filter
Features like the 50D.
Announced in Septeber and in dealers in october
Now for the new 1Series we will have to wait for next year.
was really hoping for at least 5fps and hopefully 6, at least with a crop mode....
and better AF.
once again it's either 1 series or forget for top notch sports/action/getting any lower-DOF in focus I guess....
i would hope it would be well, well under D700 price then, with not much better AF, no video and such a low frame rate, especially after THREE years.
basically it's D700 and deal with lost reach or canon and deal with lost everything else (and if teh AF is not good enough 21MP won;t resolve for sports cropping anyway and then that advantage goes away)
should be awesome for the landscaper though if they dont charge too much

although if you want top AF then you need $4200+ with canon so for those with not tons of cold hard cash you are out of luck with canon, since 50D won't have it, this won;t have.
in all honesty the better AF shouldn't really add more than $400 and a $1700 50D and $2800 5dmkii with better af would be tempting oer $1400 and $2200, especially since the 1 series will surely be $4000+.
best would be to split the lines like nikon so if you get more into landscape/regular stuff you get the most you can for your money but if you are currently doing more action stuff you can still cover it without going 100% broke.
if this is how they are going them no need to rush before the sports season is over and i may just sit a while and wait on 60D or 50D/5dmkii prices to fall....

You would also have a $2200 camera in your dreams to go alongside the $4400 one, because the 5D replacement won't come out at that price.

I worked for the Noritsu America Corp for 6 years (the worlds largest manufacturer of photofinishing equipment) I can assure that the Japanese had very little respect for there american counterparts. When one of the guys I worked with started learning Japanese he was told by his japanese superiors that if he learned japanese he would be terminated.
We had a situation where we worked on a new high speed photo printer for a week trying to fix a problem with inconsistent color we couldn't figure it out, so finally we ordered a $30,000 CPU rack for the machine. That night we got a call from an anonymous japanese technician explaining that the problem was the negatives were getting to hot in the gate because of the high intensity lamp. He told us to go to a pet store and buy a fish tank bubble pump and run a hose up under the negative gate and it would cure the problem. The bottom line was they knew there was a problem all along but wouldn't tell us until we ordered alot of expensive parts because they didn't want to admit to an error in design.
Even though we worked for the manufacturer we were always very limited as to the information given to us about the machines we were working on. We were simply told to change parts but couldn't get schematics so that we could actually troubleshoot a problem. If we asked a question of japanese technicians with regard to a new piece of equipment the discussions on there end were not about the ansewer but about how much the americans needed to know to do there job. All very frustrating....Show more →
