IMO it will be announced soon. But they don't want to shadow the yet-fresh 50D announcement.
I'd say today, tomorrow or early next week.
For the fun, there are a few bugs in some of the web pages of the Japanese Canon site that show that the 50D announcement page was actually made end of July
And I could be wrong but according to the behavior of some pages (can't tell more) it seems it will be named 5D mk II (and not 7D) - the behavior could just be just a coincidence(?).

I don't understand this idea at all. Why would Canon even release the "7D" then? It would make more sense if the "7D" is the now released 50D, and the "3D" is going to be what many others (and youself) speculate.
The difference between the "7D" and 50D is just ~1.5 mps? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me for them to even release that.
EOSFUN knows!!!!! He is always correct;
The longer Canon waits the more their audience would get the impression that the full frame for all of us strategy didn't work, and even Canon concluded it is only a niche of the market. If one reads Canon's statetement at introduction of the 5D and white paper info on full frame technology you will understand why this is not their strategy. Canon invested over hundreds of mio $ in factories in OITA for the production of CMOS sensors amongst that full frame sensors. With Sony definitely making the entry in the full frame market and Nikon eating in the pie of the FF market since a while Canon will present their next full frame amateur camera soon! If you are a pro, or have a press invitation for the meeting you'll definitely learn more september 22, 11.00 AM in Koeln Germany. It's definitely gonna be an EOSfun meeting!
you know it seems as if canon now is now playing the catch up game, before it was canon who had all the goodies. Now it seems as if canon is trying to keep up with nikon. Don't get me wrong i'm a canon shooter myself but its seems that canon got too laid back. I think for a 5D replacement to be just as good as the d700 will not be good enough of a canon move. This would still have them lagging in this catch up game. I feel as if canon is going to come out or needs to come out with something big, a 5Dmk2 that will have nikon drop jaw or at least i'm hoping with all this nikon/canon releases it has really got me excited on what and who will release something next. what's next?

Nonsense. Canon has the top pro camera (1Ds3), top photojournalist camera (1D3), top entry pro camera (5D, yes, still the best bang for the buck), top crop factor camera (50D), and least expensive entry level camera (350D).

I'll add to your question another to the OP of that rumor: does the original poster of this 3D / 7D specs have any clue of the cost of production line for sensors? Can he explain why Canon would invest to have an 18Mp sensor line AND a 16.7 MP line at the same time for just two camera's that cover less than a few percent of the market?
Second, megapixel tunnel vision is a serious disease.
But megapixels count. There is no substitute for megapixels. The 100 megapixel camera is only a few years from now. I predicted that when the 3MP D30 was upgraded to the 6MP D60. At that time, with no multi MP digibacks, people told me we never needed so much MP. But now, a little more than 5 years after the D60 upgrade we are here. Around 15 MP has become mainstream already, 5 times over that first D30. Keep in mind the 1Ds (classic) was the Hasselblad killer (film-era), so why wouldn't Canon (and others if they like to step up the podium) be pushing the envelope to levels of performance like the Leaf, Sinar or Phase One Digibacks, which have become around 50MP now. In fact Canon showcased their 50MP full frame sensor already behind the doors of some technology shows. Really the MP race is no disease, this is technology evolving. We want more megapixels because the more pixels the more EOSfun
There will be no 5DII ever.... a new name like 7D will come (II stands for DIGIC genre) so please stop refering to the new Canon prosumer FF SLR as 5DII. On the other hand keep in your mind about the new MarkIV that will come next year with x1.3 and FF capabilities.

I quit disagree here. IMHO D700 is now both the top photojournalist and top entry pro camera (until the 5D2 is out that is). D3 probably best sport camera righ now. Despite the 50D which looks awesome, the D300 remains a top crop factor camera. The 1ds3 is the top pro camera indeed, but we should see soon very strong competition with the D3x and the Sony alpha900.

No, the 5D is almost half the price of the D700.

Not as good as the 50D, and I'm certain the 50D will whomp the D300 in image quality. It would do that even if the megapixels were equal, which they are not.

Well, ... mythical cameras and unannounced cameras ...
I have an mk3 myself and handsdown to the 8k 1ds3. But honestly I shoot with guys with nikon d3 and d300 all day. Nikon D3 kicks my mk3 butt all day long, better ISO better WB and better SCREEN with all this so much better why is the mk3 priced more than the D3..I know people say screen don't matter but in reality it does matter. Not only that its price is 3k less than 1ds3. The only reason why i'm still with canon? i've got too much canon gear to switch. I'm also waiting on the canon new release, hoping that and crossing my finger that it will actually be above nikon head so I don't have to switch..hahahah..really I love my mk3 and I think that canon IQ still rocks but what's up with the cheap screen? hehehe whoohooo go canon.
