Cool.. :P No problems with the conversion i suspect? I just missed a very interesting new prospect today (late 1.4), but the final price went to high for me... So I'm still looking for a mint condition copy of both the 1.8 and the 1.4 Zuikos...
And - about "crapper" lenses... One of my very best lenses is a very beat up old Nikkor 85/2 - it's seriously sharp all over, lower contrast at 2.0, but... the way it "draws" at medium distances is to die for! It's actually better than the two copies of the legendary 105/2.5 that I've tried. (Their construction and optical formulas seem to be exactly scaled copies of each other when you scrutinize the optical drawings up close. They're VERY similar, but with a 20% focal length difference). It's also better than the newer copies of 85/1.8AF that I've tried personally And it looks like crap - externally.
Some people say that the worse an old Nikkor looks, the better it works :P

I'd really like to see some end results from your conversion when you have the time!

Greetings from Sweden / J

not the best examples, yet, but oh well... camera is a D3

Assessment.. it's pretty sharp, but not sure about the harsh bokeh....

Pretty "hard" scenes to draw, but I agree on the "harsh" bokeh... I can't recall ever seeing my copy doing stuff this edgy! What s/n is your copy? Some very minor geometry adjustments were made during the 1.8's life-cycle...
Mine is 5.756.267 - "made in Japan" etched on the front.

I was going for groceries, so I grabbed the D40 with the Zuiko and thought to try to replicate your results, but I couldn't find a situation that corresponded to well with your pictures.
Anyway, here's the best I could do:

First, at 1.8, strong outlining of OOF highlights. Firstly, in my normal shooting I always try to avoid strong OOF highlights, and I never use 1.8 on this lens, so I haven't really noticed this before...

Second, at 2.8, OOF highlights are much more even - approaching what many call "perfect" discs. They're evenly lit, and have softer edges.

And, third, a nicer example at 2.8...

my 50 is a bit older than yours, in the 27xxx range, and is pretty ratty internally. I've got my radar on a few from KEH, and 50 1.4 on ebay. My next possible venture might be a 50 3.5 macro as well, but we'll see... I'm actually quite impressed with the funky bokeh

I think that with the reduced sharpness, the pre-"made in japan" lenses had more pleasing rendering... but alas, are not modern-sharp.

I've not noticed this ridge on either my 50/1.8 F.Zuiko or my SC 100/2.8. I have a 21/2 that I want to convert and I'm just waiting on my adapter to come. Hopefully it will be here today. I need this conversion to be reversible. I am not clear on the difference in OM mounts between one- and two-pieces.

Do you guys have any idea if any of the wide primes from Zuiko will be as easy to convert? Something in the 28-40mm range?

Only the later 28mm f2.8 has the double ring. Other lenses are:
35-70 f3.5/4.5 the tiniest standerd zoom I know of with c-very good image quality
50mm 1.8 MIJ
50mm 1.4 last version
50-250 f5 zoom
60-200 (almost all have a foggy last element)
and the mighty fantastic 35-80 f2.8

What are your referring too with the double ring?

the double ring is a different way of making the mount. Most OM-zuiko's have a solid one piece mount with DOF markings on it. On these lenses the mount is two part: brass or alu with the DOF markings and a fine stainless steel mount which can be replaced in the way the OP has stated.

I don't see why you cannot just remove the 1-piece mount and be rid of the DoF markings. That was what I planned to do.

ulrikft, I'll post and update my progress in this thread. I am waiting on my adapter to come in as they were back-ordered. Whenever I get it I will be sure to get to work converting my 50/1.8 with a once piece mount in hopes of being able to reversibly convert my OM 21/2.
