Have a look at dpreview's conclusions on the 50D:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos50d/page31.asp

"Considering the disadvantages that come with higher pixel densities such as diffraction issues, increased sensitivity towards camera shake, reduced dynamic range, reduced high ISO performance and the need to store, move and process larger amounts of data, one could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that at this point the megapixel race should probably stop. One consequence of this is that the 50% increase in pixel count over the 40D results in only a marginal amount of extra detail."

"We're by no means saying the 50Ds image quality is bad but it's simply not significantly better than the ten megapixel 40D. In some areas such as dynamic range and high ISO performance it's actually worse and that simply makes you wonder if the EOS 50D could have been an (even) better camera if its sensor had a slightly more moderate resolution."

Wow

David..

You did read also that there testing methodology with this camera was very flawed right?

I would check more reputable sites for reviews personally. Who in their right mind uses beta software to post a full review? Ugh.

the thing is the higher density doesn't actually make diffraction or camera shake any worse at all compared to lower density camera, all it means is that at much stopped down depths you might not gain the full advantae of the extra MP and if you don't use a slightly higher shutter speed you might not gain the full advanatge of teh extra MP, but you can never do worse, it's always the same or better and if you a little care, you can get the full advantage.

Be sure to give Imaging Resource's 50D review a go as well. They compare it to the 40D and D90 and I believe their methodology is a little more sound:

For those that have not picked up a 50d yet, amazon has body for 1199 and kit for 1399, a couple of hundred lower then the initial release.

It looks like B&H and J&R are now also at 1199 for body only.

I just got a notice that Canon was doing $100 instant rebates on several items including the 50D. Wonder if that $1199 reflects the rebate or not.

EDIT: Yes.. it does reflect the new Canon rebate.

I was rushing with the camera, as I only had a limited amount of time with it, I just set the ISOs and Fstops, and metering the same. I though it was interesting how they metered differently than each other although the shots were taken within just a few seconds of each other. I agree on the detail though, I believe the 50d does have much more resolving capability. Ill post up a couple more pics after I get CSIV installed in a minute.

Seems like the 50D image is not exposed the same as the D90 file. I noticed that on the D90 file you have "Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV and different shutter speeds" Not sure that makes a difference here with noise, but typically a brighter (less underexposed) image will show less noise.

Again, not saying you're not right...But it seems that the exposures are not the same.

Also, I see less detail in the D90 shot...but that would be a trade off if all things were equal I suppose.

I am now trying out my second 50D. I sent my first one back because of problems - see previous posts. My local camera shop was great and they exchanged the camera without any hassle. The new unit had the updated firmware installed at the factory. I don't have the time or technical knowledge to test it like many of the other posters on this thread - the comments do make interesting reading. I am pretty much a bottom line shooter - I want my equipment to work well and function the way I except it to and I except this unit to perform as good as and little better than my 40D. I will report back if there are problems with the new toy.

Dear all

Is there anyone having error 01 problem after the firmware update? The unit will hang after this error apear and only can re-use after removing the battery.

Regards,

Jeffery

No errors here ... about 1000 shots over several days. I upgraded the firmware when I received the camera.

IR used to make big prints and compare cameras that way, iirc. too bad that don't do that any more.

They still use (large) prints for their reviews...

Just a general comment from a long-time Canon shooter who recently upgraded to a 50D. There has been an inordinate amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth out on the boards when it comes to higher ISO noise values from the new 50D. If you look at IR's test results using their handy comparometer the 50D matches the D300, the 40D and Canon's XSi/450D to my eyes. All three of these cameras have lower pixel counts to boot. I shot my first college hockey game of the season this past weekend with the 50D and am very pleased with the ISO 1600 results. AF is pretty darn accurate too. Overall I'm happy with the choice to upgrade.

I started digital with the 10D. I kept the 10D and purchased the 30D. Was not happy at all with the 30D and was able to sell with a small loss and bought the 5D. It was a night and day move.

I am still happy with the 5D but needed a smaller sensor camera as a backup to the 5D. I decided to sell the 10D and have purchased the 50D. Overall, I am happy with the purchase but admit it is a different beast. It is different in that you cannot (or I could not) pick up the camera and shoot. I had to read the manual first because the menu system is completely different and requires a lot of thinking to make the right choices.

When I got the camera it had 1.01 firmware. I have upgraded to 1.03 but at all time I have not encountered any errors.

Err 01 is most probably due to contact/s between lens and body and it happens generally due to 3rd party TC or extension tube. Dirty contact can be one of the culprit.
