I was supposed to pick one up yesterday in Minneapolis, Canon was going to ship on Tuesday. They found out is has been pushed back one week. I expect I should see one by the end of next week. Of course we have all been around shipment dates before!

The price listed is in Euro Dollars. The last time I checked, the conversion is the other way round...
EURO 890 is approximately US$1300
The price above equates to about US$1872 based on bank rates.
I am saying that the new camera has a bigger lcd screen so it's easier to see for preview reasons.
But will I be disappointed with the AF performance compared to my current body. This is the main reason I have a 1d, all of the other bodies I tried were not up to low light fast focus.
"Low illumination" is the Joker in the deck, otherwise I'm sure you would be happy with an xxD body. If low levels of illumination is something you will frequently encounter then you had better hang on to your 1-series body.
I shoot outdoors nearly all the time under good illumination conditions and it's hard for me to tell the difference between the 40D and the 1DmkII from the standpoint of AF (I shoot landscapes and lots of ducks swimming around ponds). Outdoors my 40D is the primary camera and the 1DmkII has the back-up lens on it. Shooting indoors and low illumination ... well, the 1DmkII is hard to beat, I love it ... really a great camera. Another advantage the 1DmkII offers is when you shoot landscapes; it provides a wider FOV compared to an xxD body for any given set of lenses in your bag.

I doubt there will be much differences between a 40D and 1D series cam when using One Shot in good light too... But how about AI Servo tracking?
IF the 40D likes the light (i.e say summer 4PM-7PM sunny and contrast) then it seems to do AI servo pretty well, not as well as 1 series but not so far off at all and better than my 20D.
IF the 40D doesn't like the light (backlit, partly cloudy flat lesser contrast or blaring bright noon with everything super bright) then it does way, way worse and even way worse than my 20D.
at night it's a tad better than 20D and somewhat worse than 1 series.
speed is much faster than 20D and a little slower than 1 series.
at least as far as I can tell from what experiences i have managed to have over the past year of doing soccer.
it seems to like good contrast and not crazy bright amounts of noon-type sun and seems to vary much more depending upon lighting than the other canon bodies. seems to vary from really quite good to extremely poor.

This is my experience exactly. Birds against the light won't focus. My 20D was fine.

Some people in the UK already have the camera. The EOS 50D and EF-S 18-200 IS are showing up on retail.
At DP Review, a forum member posted a link to this ISO 3200 Full Size Sample. Shot in RAW, processed in Lightroom at default settings (ie minor sharpening & Chroma NR).
Notice the banding in the darkest area.
But overall, it looks good. Cleans up easily in post processing easily, and IMHO good enough for print.
