How hard can be to stop down the lens and pass EXIF info?
Not difficult at all, considering that Cosina made the Voigtlander 125/2.5 in EOS mount with that exact functionality, and likely in the same damned factory that the ZF/ZS/ZK lenses are produced for Zeiss.
Unlike everyone else they don't have to get autofocus working.
Agreed.
What are the gems of the new Zeiss line? In particular where is Zeiss strong compared to the Canon counterpart? It seems to me most of their lenses sit between the L and non-L Canon lenses (in price and speed)
The 18 seems pretty nice. People seem to love the 100/2 and 50/2 as well.

They might sit somewhere between L and non-L lenses in terms of price and speed, but they are at least a notch above the L lenses in terms of overall sharpness, micro-contrast, and color reproduction. I'm sure many users will appreciate the peace of mind of buying a lens and not having to do extensive tests and comparisons to see if they got a lemon or not, which unfortunately cannot be applied to the Ls.

as cogitech mentioned, the 50 and 100 macros are incredible pieces of glass. The 28 f2 is also very nice and many rave about the 35 f2, though I haven't shot with that one myself.

I just got a ZF 50/2 Makro today. So far I am stunned out of my mind. Sharp, colorful, incredible bokeh, and a REALLY nice focus ring. The aperture ring is a bit iffy, as others have reported, but certainly not a deal-breaker.
I'm in love. If I could have this lens AND have accurate AE, life could almost not be better. (unless Zeiss also releases an EF 21mm Distagon.)
I was just about to order the ZF 50/2 but will now wait for the ZE version.
Instead bought a Leica 100mm 2.8 APO macro and Elpro 1.2-1.1 converter on ebay after seeing weekh's pix and comments and other reviews.
After a new ZE 21 design, then maybe Zeiss could come out with an APO version of their 100 ZF with 1:1 magnification.
ive shot both the 35/2 and the 100/2 (which I still own)...wow, amazing lenses...especially the 100mm. If they come out in EF I'll be a little pissed that I have to go through the hassle of selling the ZF and getting the ZE but auto aperture would be worth it (MF is fine for me...stop down gets a bit annoying though). I'd also love to see the resurrection of the 21mm distagon and perhaps the 15mm as well (since Canon doesn't really have anything blockbuster in the UWA department...). By the picture that zeiss has on their site this rumor is believable... I for one signed up for the email they'll be sending out on the day of the announcement =)
