yes Hammerli is correct is going to be a 50D kit with the 18-200 lens, expect 15 MP, ISO 3200, face detection, HD lcd, 6.5 FPS, improve AF

Face detection ? Although it is pronounced basically the same but if this is similar to that of Nikon AF system, it would mean phase detection and not face detection.

I know its hard to believe. But wait just a couple of weeks. I can not tell much more now. I have to save a friends friend who is a really insider and important person in product development. They drank some (japanese) beer and he had some to much. And I do not want him to loose his job. But what he told is unbelieveable and awesome. You might not believe me now. But you will believe me, when you see it. Trust me.

Face detection? that's really dumb technology on a DSLR.

I disagree about face detection,... if it works for sports. My kids soccer uniforms are white and burgandy. When Shooting sports, you typically are focusing on the body, so the camera is seeing either burgandy or white, which will tend to either over or underexpose. If the face detection could pick up a players face and meter that, I would love it.

Yes, I know, I can shoot M and get the correct exposure, but then, clouds can play havoc on keeping it correct.

Ditto on this.
My dealer just confirmed that the 50D will be introduced with a 15mp sensor. This is the one pro-shop in the twin cities and I trust the product manager here. He did not know about the sensor size.

I have a hypothesis (call it a wild guess)... what if the 50D were to be the replacement of the 5D. This could be a full frame 15mp camera that is in line w/ the 40D (and below) design model. This would not be too different from the D300/D700 formula. Furthermore, if Canon were not to include weather seals an top AF, then they might undercut the price of the D700... much like the 40D undercuts the D300.

Final point, the dealer also indicated that the 50D will have an improved af (more af points), but will not be the 1-series AF.

Again... only hearsay... but from my best source.
cheers,
bruce

I have to agree with packpe89 that face detection has some place in DSLR photography.
It would be useful for very candid shots of groups in say weddings even for professional photographers. Shooting 1-3 individuals is fine but getting 5 or more faces in focus for a candid split second shot can be quite tricky at times. So, these sort of aids can come in handy too!

Or for that matter, the quintessential group photo either at the table or outdoors, I'm sure it takes a lot of guesswork (whether it was good) out of the shots wouldn't it ?

I highly doubt there's another camera in September apart from the 5D replacement.

That would be a first... camera equipment is usually announced by Canon Europe...

But wait - how the heck did I wind up posting in this thread

Yes. Of course I can. Some are accurate. Others, too. But less. The most believeable to me is my coffee reading thread. Its an expensive brand. So I think I really can trust it.

I live in Hawaii and it's all true

I've used the new 50D and 18-200 lens. In addition to the 15mp and face detection the 50D also has a new "scenic" landscape setting that automatically replaces your own crappy landscape photo with one of several built in scenes (beach, mountain, lush vegetation, desert, sunset, sunrise, snow, city, city at night, moon lit night).

The user has no control over this of course since research shows user intervention in a DSLR at this market segment just makes for lousy photographs. So the new DigicIV processor analyizes the scene, then after several trillion calculations randomly selects one of the presets

As the final version (50D) is not yet ready, Canon is also considering adding the same "features" to sports and portrait modes as well. For example when shooting soccer the camera would replace the users, crappy, OOF, lousy framing etc... with one of several presets taken by professionals (using D3s) so that the end user remains sufficiently impressed that he will buy some fast long 2.8 lenses.

Portrait would of course replace the users lousy photo with one of a professional model.

Canon is also toying with the idea of just eliminating the need for the user to even press the shutter, may even eliminate the shutter release so that all one has to do is point the camera at something and one of the preset scene photos is automatically displayed on the LCD for everyone's veiwing pleasure.

This is sure to please those moving up from a P&S and those that are well...... just plain lousy photographers.

Much more to come of course after I speak to some more of my sources at this dealer meeting..... stay tuned

Gene

You know, this was pretty funny. So will the cam deliberately add shake to non IS lenses so folks will be forced to buy IS lenses?

Thanks Ben. I posted earlier in this thread that there is a big dealer meeting in Hawaii right now and that the owner of National Camera in Minneapolis is attending it. I was just mocked for the post. National is the largest dealer in Minnesota with several stores.
I know your are in the retail photo bus and I remember you for your early Naturescapes association.
