I will be sending a lens to Canon for service via UPS. Is UPS shipping insured by default or do you have to buy a separate UPS insurance option? I do not seem to find info. about insurance at the UPS web site.
Where i live in PA. , the UPS ground shipped, is free for the first $100.00. Any additional amount , will cost you, the sender, a certain amount for each $100.00. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Harry
I agree with Kingfishphoto. The first $100 is free then so much per $100 after that. I believe if you take it to a UPS terminal it's $0.90 / $100. My local UPS store is $2.00 / $100 so I avoid them.

Items are automatically insured up to $900.00. More insurance is added based on declared value.
Typo It's $100 as previously mentioned.
If your gear is insured separately, you may want to skip the UPS insurance. My agent has told me not to bother with the UPS insurance because my gear policy covers items damaged in transit, and its better insurance than what UPS offers.

Thanks all. Kingfishphoto, do "UPS Stores" charge you more for shipping than "UPS Customer centers" in general? Sounds like UPS Stores are operated separately from UPS and are out to make a profit over standard UPS rates?

Yes Wing Tong, UPS stores are franchised. Out to make more money than UPS rates, I cannot verify that statement. I have a UPS account, which did not cost' me anything to create, and I just fill out an acct slip, and drop of the package. I do know for a fact, that by having an acct, that I pay less, when charged per shipment, than if I pay for each item individually shipped at the UPS store. Take the few minutes to create an acct Here. Once done, you can just go to your nearest UPS store, and request a Ground Weigh Bill, and ship it that way to Canon.

Hi Wing.
I believe, you may be correct. I use the local shops because: I live near Allentown PA., the UPS is near the Allentown Airport, via route 22, some of the most congested traffic, on our East Coast. Upon arrival, at the UPS center, after a very long drive, you are confronted first by no parking spaces, then upon entering UPS, your in line behind half of the non English speaking or comperhending, folks in America, all needing help, like special assistance. So for a 75 year old American, the UPS store, looks mighty good, at whatever price.
Cheers
