I'd say it was a stray hair or piece of fuzz... something... I have that same problem sometimes, though it doesn't show up quite as "wide". Maybe something that got on the lens when you changed it ?
I have an aviary with smaller wire, same pattern and every once in a while, depending on sun position/time of day, I have seen this sort of aberration. Had you shot 2 more shots of exactly the same thing the light might have changed and the shadow would likely disappear?

I'm glad to hear it has an optical origin! I was starting to worry, this place is supposed to be haunted.............
I agree with hollypop. When I look closely at the pixels, the chain links seem to be the same width whether they are within or outside the smudge. This suggests to me the image behind the smudge isn't out of focus. I strongly suspect that part of the image is clouded by some sort of lint on or near the lens.
I would have to agree with Hollypop and Auntipode. I looks like lint or some such. Were you wearing a ball cap? Have long hair? Do you believe in UFO's, if not it could just be a weather balloon...
