taking the daughter to 6 Flags > Pack as little camera equipment as possible as I don't want to carry that much gear all day long.
Mark III
EF 17 - 40mm
EF 100 - 400 IS
X tra battery
580 EX and extra batteries.....
Extension tubes ?? Nahh...... Well ... Heck bought them over a year ago and have never used them......... Why in the world would I pack those ? Oh what the heck throw em in the bag !!! SAY WHAT !! Bought them a year ago and have never used them >> So why Pack them ?? I have no idea what possessed me to take them......... But glad I did
Arrive at Six Flags, look at map >> Six Flags has a butterfly Garden REALLY I asked my wife........ hmmm I did bring those extension tubes....... I did bring the 100 - 400
OK I have never used the extension tubes and I've never photographed Butterflies................
I spent 90 minutes inside a dimly lit with little natural light 90 degree 90 percent humidified room................... Can you say sweat!!
Hey Anthony buddy your photos are getting better & better maaaaan great images here, specially #1...that's the killer shot of the series IMO
You're improving thread after thread
I have to try these tubes w my 100-400mm L IS ! wicked wicked combo!
Did you had a diffuser on the 580
No complaints here...except the PP job in #6...what a heck happened got caried away w NN ?
#3 is my fav, glad you finally used the tubes. I carry mine with me about everywhere I go, don't weigh much and the glass is always clean on them I took a visit to the Doorly Zoo in Omaha, with only my Canon G9 in hand, got a few keeper shots, but was trying to decide rather to post them or not.
Great, fantastic, amazing, wonderful, impressive, astonishing, stupendous, and fabulous shots.
Wow Anthony! Excellent shots and what detail! Fantasitc! Keep it up. Obviously there is no uppper limit for you.
Now you are the butterfly King too.
Martin
While looking at these I was wondering where your butt was, but I'm kinda glad I DIDN'T see it... These are good, Ant! They're not the easiest thing to get decent captures of, I know, I've tried and in the same conditions as you. But I"ve never tried using the 100-400 on 'em. Now I think I shall...My faves are #s 1,3,6 and 8. And glad to hear you're considerate towards these l'il Flutterbys, not using the monster Better Beamer on 'em. It would have been akin to going after an ant (not YOU Ant ) with a meat cleaver...Hope to see ya in Big Morongo come next Saturday!
OK, now I know your daughter brings out the 'softer' side in you
I think what I like most about these is the fact that you took them! I know that comps and shots like these don't come easy on a subject like this, I know you spent time and worked hard to get these.............well I love them man
Beautiful color, nice comps, great angles and well done on the flash without a diffuser or very good PP to tame the flash. I think these butterflies and the ones you have seen here posted (Socrate) brought a good creative 'Ant', I'm proud of you on these
So what to do different next time, well I bet you have some ideas but now I think you know how difficult DOF is with subjects like this, some are perfect some need more and the same happens with flowers Subjective to what you like. So I would like to see a bit more next time and a diffuser for your flash will knock down the hard shadows, I fill mine diffuser with fishing line to help even more.
Nice little birds Ant, see what happens when you use a smaller lens, smaller birds.
Nice job on these some I like some I don't but that isn't the point, you shot something different, did a good job and posted it. Looks like you had fun doing it, well except for the heat!
Totally whicked DOF on these, yet, pretty none-the-less...... I was really hoping to see some Butt..........z though
Well first off I'm not sure how I feel about you wanted to see my butt
I was a bit surprised at the DOF. According to the calculator the DOF was
0.05 ............. Man that's thin !! I didn't know that til I got home looked at the shots and then looked at a DOF Calc.
Anthony,
which 6 Flags did you go to which had a butterfly garden I wonder if Six Flags Magic Mountain has one
Anthony, these are great. I have to visit some butterfly place.....
# 3, 4, & 8 are my top picks.
These were taken at the Six Flags just out side of San Fransisco. I had no idea they had some animals (Tiger, Mountain Lions, Giraffe, and a few others) They even have a dolphin show and killer whales......... What the heck !! I guess I know now Not sure if the one down your way has any of that stuff or not. The animals cages were not photographer friendly. I tried for a few minutes but gave up d/t heavy wiring and cages. Didn't like the looks of any of my shots.

Give it a try >> I was a bit surprised at how some of them turned out. I didn't really feel the 1-400 would perform all that well but figured.... Why Not..... I'm here
No Diffuser used as I don't own one. I dont' know if that would make a difference or not. I've heard of people using diffusers but know nothing about them.
The thing with number 6 is DOF I believe. It looks the same way in RAW. It's just not the best shot >> But I liked how it was eating the banana and the eyes are in focus.
Thanks Nello >> Appreciate the feedback and comments sir
Chad, #3 is my fav, glad you finally used the tubes. I carry mine with me about everywhere I go, don't weigh much and the glass is always clean on them I took a visit to the Doorly Zoo in Omaha, with only my Canon G9 in hand, got a few keeper shots, but was trying to decide rather to post them or not.

Disclaimer: Except for #5 and #6
Well your right they don't weigh much but do take up space. I don't have much spare room in my bag > So they get left behind a lot.
I almost wish I had a G9 or some other smaller camera. After carrying a bag around my neck and shoulder all day my neck is really sore!! Don't worry I'll whine to someone else for attention........
I did look at 5 again >> I had two version of this shot and I accidentally posted the wrong one > Your comment made me realize that. Thanks for the honesty and Heads up on that one!! The first time PP that shot >> After looking at it << didn't like it, so I did it over again............ Sorry about the bad shot
Re-Posted the better of the two on number 5
I'll look for your zoo shots with the G9!! Just got home and turned the puter on
