I had the same problem finding info on the KPS. -Only that someone paid $95, delivered, last year.

It looks pretty good, but from the pictures I'd say the brightscreen D2's glass has a significantly larger diameter. I'm feeling better and better about keeping it.

I'm even still OK with the stock focus screen, at least for now. (waiting for Photokina... )

The Korean language looks to be a nightmare for English speakers ! Try the following .

Source for KPS U-13C :

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-KPS-U-13C-Magnifying-Eyepiece-1-35x-for-Canon-Nikon_W0QQitemZ330264423266QQihZ014QQcategoryZ43479QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This is the universal model which seems to fit most cameras .

Costs : $US65. Delivered : $80 by airmail , $91 by EMS courier . The latter is much quicker ; I have had stuff sent by EMS from Japan delivered door-to-door in less than 48 hours .

With the KPS eyepiece, can you still see the exposure information at the bottom of the viewfinder? With the 1.25x AF-C, I can still see the bottom readout.

This is one thing I just don't understand about the camera design people:
Are none of them photographers themselves? Isn't it obvious that manual focus
is still very useful? Maybe someday Canon will market a 5D style body with
an absolutely superb viewfinder, and tout this to the landscape and fine art shooters.

If you'll look at the Canon USA 5D white paper, Canon USA tried to promote the 5D as a backcountry landscape camera. I agree that with a few improvements in areas such as these, Canon could market the cam as a landscaper's dream come through. That would seem to go against their usual MO in appealing to the widest market possible.

I pretty much shoot all of my WA primes at infinity 95% of the time, so there is little need for focusing aids (except for a couple of lenses where infinity isn't right on the mark and that other 5% of the time). I started using the AF-C because the exposure information in the viewfinder is dimmer than other cams and in any kind of brightish light outdoors, the information gets washed out and becomes virtually unreadable. The 1.25x helps a tiny bit. So, there are few things I'd like for Canon to fix about their viewfinders on the 5D. (40D I tried at a store was the same.)

Cableaddict: I have purchased 3rd party hoods for my LCD. You can't look through the viewfinder (unless you are using an angle finder) without collasping the hood. So, for most shooting situations if you are a frequent histogram checker, its open, collapse, open, collapse, open, collapse. Besides the hood had little effect on the light pouring in on the LCD.

I think the future for MF has to be in a high resolution, responsive EVF.

That's for illustration only. They simply enlarge the original picture by 1.35x. However, it's not hard to read it.

I agree, which is why I recently removed my Hoodman LCD cover.

However, that's not at all what I was referring to, above. I was talking about the LCD becoming a veiwfinder, once cameras no longer have mirror boxes. This is definitely coming (the latter, not necessarily the former.)

BTW, & FWIW: The more I use my D2 eyepiece, the more I get used to it. The small niggles have become less bothersome, and the positive aspects have become indespensible to me.
I still don't think it's really 1.75X, but at this point it would take a stun gun to get me to remove it.

Most other vendors would have labeled the magnification as ~1.3x. Brightscreen just chose to square the figure, because the area magnification would be 1.75x. This is misleading, IMHO. They don't specify this in their website, but when they were developing the original magnifier, the details were spelled out in this forum https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/410678/0.

Thanks, Psquared. That makes a lot of sense.

It surely doesn't say much for the Brightscreen company. Still, I'm very happy with this thing now, even to the point of recommending it to others.

Ariithka, if you do get that Korean eyepiece, PLEASE measure the diameter of the outer lens. I'm curious to see if it is indeed smaller than the D2, or if it's just a trick of the photo.

FWIW,

I tought I'd post my thoughts on the Brightscreen D2, now that I've had it for a number of weeks.

Obviously I had some serious reservations about it at first, but I have now gotten used to it.

The angle of my head to the eyepiece had to change, in order to see the whole view. At irst this felt very unnatural. Now it feels organic. The rubber cup also seems to have softened a bit, or become more pliable.

Bottom line: Now I would never, ever take it off. It's wonderful and I whole-heartedly recommend it.

I received my U-13C eyepiece a couple of days ago and I'm very happy with it. The build quality is quite good, it seems very solid and screws on the viefinder very tightly. It came with 2 different eyecups to choose from, I chose the bigger one which makes my camera look like a Nikon

It didnt feel very natural in the beginning but I got used to it pretty quick. It seemed like it was chopping off the corners of the image but it was only a simple matter of learning how to place my eye on it properly. After a couple of days it became instinctive. The screen is sharp and clear corner to corner, I can accurately focus on things that are at the very corner of my frame (I use manual lenses mostly). I havent noticed any vignetting. I use it with an Ee-s screen, no problems there, keeper ratio is the same if not better and things pop in and out of focus the same as before. I havent noticed a drop in brightness and all the viewfinder info is clearly visible. The best part is that my 5D's viewfinder used to be a little smaller than my film camera's (EOS630), now its actually bigger! Awesome! After that I had a look through my 400D and I got depressed, I dont know how I used that thing...

I'm Ariithka's friend BTW

What's the current best solution for the 5D MkIV as far as utilizing a magnifiying eyepiece to aid manual focusing? Thanks

Wow....ZOMBIE THREAD. It's odd to click on a thread and see a response from yourself 9 years earlier, about something I had completely forgotten I ever did.

As to current things? I have no idea, but probably asking in the Canon forum may yield more answers. With live view, it's less important than it once was, but still can be valuable. I'd sort of forgotten about manual focusing difficulties, having shot with EVFs the past 6 years.
