so am I to assume that the 10.5mm is the widest rectilinear fisheye made by nikon?
For DX format - yes

D300 wrote:
and for a circular fisheye, the nikon 6mm is the widest?(although not produced?)
Yes - 220 degrees

just one more question:

what would the difference be between the DX 10.5mm and the FX (FF) 16mm fisheye, since both claim to cover 180degrees?

16mm fisheye specs here: http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/AFNikkor/af16mmfish/index.htm

thanks all.

For all intents and purposes no difference in the images they produce. They are both full frame fish eye lenses and both offer 180 degree images diagonally when mounted on their respective formats. A fish eye will always be a fish eye but the 16mm on a DX camera isn't going to give you a 180 diagonal FOV as it's image circle is much larger than the 10.5.

will be interesting to compare one actual images (if one has) the differences between both 10.5 on a DX and the 16 on an FX.

i suppose also no difference if the 10.5 was mounted on an FX? would there be a crop?

or if the 16 was mounted on a DX, say D300.

sorry if i have been ranting. thanks guys.

I know Guy (gugs) did some shots of the 10.5 on FX... Hopefully he has a link to that thread or won't mind posting the pics here...

You have to saw off the lens hood on a 10.5mm if you want a complete circle on FX.

both being rectilinear, the 10.5mm just seems more fisheyey when compared to the 16mm. thanks poisonpill.
