nikt, are you a member of Canon's executive designer team? Or a rep? Strategy guru? Please tell us!! Otherwise how would have all the insider information about Canon’s so called relief with D700 specs you are sharing with us?
Or are you just a troll form the Nikon forum?
As someone who started with the 10D and progerssed to the 20D > 5D > 40D > 1DSIII my impressions are. Sold the 10D to a friend who really wanted it. It was execellent for general use, but a little clunky. My SD800IS outdoes it and stays on my belt. The 20D was a vast improvement over the 10D in handling. The images improved somewhat, now it sits in the closet. The 40D I purchased for the Occasional sports and to see how the live view and 14 bits worked out. It sits in the trunk of my car for my friends to use in "P" mode. The 5D was a terriffic step up in IQ and finally I started to get the landscape images I was after. It is now my backup camera or used by an assistant. The 1DSIII in now my everyday camera that is used for everything except sports and is the poor mans answer to a PhaseOne 645 P45 or P65 for landscapes. My take on selling used cameras is that you take such a loss that I would rather keep them. Sometimes they are useful. I still have several 21/4 X 21/4 film cameras that take execellent landscapes and wish I had kept my 4 X 5, but the processing is such a hassle I don't use them much any more.
Yes, it's in the cards........basically a 40D hopped up with an FF imaging sensor and a few "invisible" (ineffective ? ) AF points. It can be yours for a modest sum of $3,499.99. You think that's expensive ? Au contraire, that's dirt cheap considering the astronomical cost of FF sensor production (says Canon).

No you don't want the price, only the spec
Buy the D700 if you like it so much..............
I also bet that have never even seen the camera that you say is so good
I don't want the price? What do you base this on? Care to make more idiotic and totally unfounded remarks?
It would hardly make any sense for me to sell a lot of expensive canon glass to get a nikon body, if there is a chance that the new 5d will fit my needs, but if it doesen't i guess the d700 is it.
And I have just seen the d3 and d300, but I have no indications that the d700 will perform radically different than those, and several of the norwegian pro nikoners have tried and praised pre-production ones.

Would you guys be satisfied if the 5D2 has the exact same specs as the 1Ds3 but 16MP? Seems like people are expecting the 5D2 to trump the 1Ds3 but cost $2,000. Expectations for the 5D2 are too high and impossible to fulfill. I mean, are you guys okay with the camera only going up to ISO3200?
It's looking like either the 5D2 fails expectations or the 1Ds3 owners will feel pretty stupid for paying $8,000 for their camera.
"Expectations for the 5D2 are too high and impossible to fulfill"
You're right "in theory" and I agree with you, but....
and it's a huge BUT....
It's long past time for adjustments in the markets AND expectations. Canon has "had their way" with the public for years and is charging $8k for what exactly? A sensor in a sub $4k body.....
What many new comers to the photography world don't understand is that the cost of these cameras is for the most part dramatically out of touch with production costs. If Nikon can put all their high end professional features (except VF) and PAY someone else to mfg the sensor, and then sell it profitably for $3k, people darned well should start expecting a LOT more for their money. They absolutely should start expecting Canon to release a good, working product (unlike previous fiascos) and if that has to start with the 5d2, all the better.
Canon has had a field day with the markets and only fools think there's any justification for it today. A 1D3 replacement with a 16.5MP sensor, (working AF), improved UDMA performance, better LCD, improved LV focus, etc. should be priced no higher than $4k full retail at release IMO. A 1ds3 (with all the other decent features Canon "forgot" to include" should sell for $5-$5.5K, or a $1,000 or $1500 premium for the sensor (if they can get away with it). Besides the sensor (and dust shaker nonsense), the 1Ds3 is only equal and in many ways inferior to the Nikon D3, now selling around $4k+.
Expecting value is not just an crazy idea, it's something that everyone should be demanding, regardless if that individual will ever be able to afford a $4k or $8k camera.

That's a big IF indeed... nobody knows if they're actually making money out of it or have just released it to regain market share on Canon. Often manufacturers have a few products that they actually loose money on just to have a full line-up of products.
Based on the D700 and in spite of Nik's theory, it might actually be the other way around: a truckload of people disappointed in Canon when they bring out the 5D's successor. In that case, Nikon's gamble will have paid off.
I just get annoyed when people join threads just to make troube (or seem to want to do so). I have an account named 5d MKII where I have 5000 USD currently (it has taken a while longer than i thought, i thought it would come in january/february), and I'm adding 500 usd to that account each month. I don't mind spending anything from 3000-5000 usd on the new 5d, I just want it to be worth it.

Really funny when a new member with a few posts here tell me that I'm a troll that only join threads to make trouble. Yes I have onle been here for over 5 years and made 17000+ posts of that

Since you think you know so much, how bout listing those specs? You don't know the specs. I have owned a couple of 5Dusts and most every Canon DSLR made. Am betting (by selling off some of my Canon glass in prep) the 5DII will be a disappointment ... and if so I'll jump to Nikon for pro features in a reasonably sized / priced camera and a couple of great lens (14-24 F 2.8 and 200-400 F4 VR)
Canon execs are happy because they are LUCKY to still have a job ... read this article!
