I would be surprised if Canon makes a 100mm macro with IS, I think more likely to get a 180mm macro with IS or a 24-70/2.8 with IS. Time will tell I guess.
Yakim if cost for the D700 is an issue, how can you think about the 200/2 VR

As a Canon shooter I am disappointed with Canon's non response to teh D700. I took some test shots last night and it is as good as the 1D Mk IIN in trms of performance in a smaller, lighter full frame package with great features like auto iso, usable 6400 iso, film like image quality...Canon, wake up and smell the roses.
The camera has been out a day and you are disapointed with Canon's non response?
I'm not saying that's the dumbest things ever said on fm, that would be silly especially as i have not read all the post ever made on fm.
But... it wasn't your best moment was it?

Does anyone really want HD video? To me, that'd be a little more useful than the print button. Remember the old saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none."?

I'm hoping that Canon gives us either something competitive to the D700, Or a bargain priced "40D Style" 5D Replacement. I think the last thing Canon should be doing now is "breathing a sigh of relief" They should be very worried!!
I had a play with the D700 today, And compared it to the 5D, And it made the 5D feel like a cheap toy! The 5D's LCD was noticeably worse then the D700 (Not surprising since Nikon uses the higher resolution LCD) But the Nikon was also much brighter then the 5D's screen.
I don't see anything wrong with the incremental upgrade that's likely to be announced: 5fps, 16mp. If I didn't have a significant amout of gear, deciding today between Nikon and Canon would be a challenge for me. But I don't see enough from Nikon to even consider switching. The 5D mkII specs will likely be both better and worse than the D700.
The only chance I see for a surprise here is a 7D with the 1DsIII sensor. But that's not a Canon-like move, especially with the camera divisions fiscally-oriented management.

but they still have the 30D on their website along with the 40D, so why not with the 5D, at leat for a little while longer?
Is the 30D still in production? AFAIK, it isnt being made anymore.
Canon now gone from 5 to 6 chip fabrication & camera assemblies - 1000D, 450D, 40D, 5D, 1D3, 1Ds3. That's a lot, and they've had to add a factory to accommodate the 6th. I cannot see them adding manufacturing processes for 2 more products - ie, a 7D and a 3D. Not when 3 of these products are more or less targeting subsets of the same market.

For all the glorified hoopla that the D700 gets, I cannot see that it is such a great step forward. That it bests the 5D? It d*** well should, the 5D is 3 years old. What do you call a product that doesn't make "best of class" when it comes out? A lemon. Question is: how long can it remain "best of class"? Second question: who will buy it? Only established Nikon buyers? A fair share of first-time buyers as well? Established Canon owners who switch over? If the first answer turns out to be correct, again, the D700 is a lemon. If it is the second, then it is OK. Only if it is the third can it be termed a real success. If it "only" tempts Canon owners until 5DII, or 50D comes out, assuming it is just a few months out, no way can Nikon sell enough into Canon's back yard to make it really lasting. Let's not forget (1) that 5D has been alone for 3 full years and making Canon oodles of cash, (2) that they (Nikon) could have spent some of the resources used for D3/D300/D700 to caring for the lower but larger end of the market where their offering (D60) is now possibly the least appealing of Sony/Canon/Pentax/Nikon, (3) that gaining market share is painful at the higher end because in this segment users have multiples lenses etc... making a full changeover very costly, i.e. only justifiable in case of a significant benefit from this change, and (4) has anyone ever said "Jees! I only wish this 5D shot could have been taken with a D700!"? ...Show more →
As the camera has been out for less than a week perhaps t should be given a chance?

Nope Not on the Canon forum
I saw it was in stock at B&H, if one is willing to buy a kit lens. I'm not sure what that means - either Nikon made a bunch of cameras or their customers are satisfied with the D3 and D300
What Reichman said about D700 being the same as the D3 makes reviews a little less important.
The image quality is about the same as a D3. The camera itself is different, but then you know that.
Canon forum or not, are you a photographer or Canon owner first? Try and put the brand ownership to one side because it's really not important at all you know.
And to answer your question, Nikon made plenty of D700's AND some have already got the camera they want with the D3 or D300. They learnt from the D200 release.

Video, well it's eating into some small bread and butter corporate stuff. I want to get it back or at least eat some of there lunch. Example client testimonials some installed product. Used to be both video and stills go now they can use stills off the video etc. It's just about making money. If you don't need the feature don't use it, it's unlikely to be a limiting factor elsewhere.

Vandit
you may be right abou the 40D.
maybe the 5D won't carry on either (one person who seemed in the know implied it would carry on until 2009 but this guy here implies it has already been stopped).
i think 2 new FF is possible though the 3D/7D split.

What? Show me where canon is laughing as their market share shrinks to Sony and Nikon atm.
No doubt the new Canons will be great....but they are not laughing.
Where did you get the idea that Canon is laughing?
You make that up?
Well, I can't go through it again if you have decided not to read the thread.
I did say 'almost'.
AND.... I did say "I don't know if it's just Canon trying to keep the faith", you know, talking it up. Which is what the manufactureres all do anyway. That's why I said it was 'commentary' and "gauging reactions" and "reading between the lines".
