One highly condemned Nikkon that I like very much is the 80-200/f4.5-5.6D-AF "Plastic Fantastic" zoom. Great little lens to keep handy.

ah, plastics !!

the future used to be plastics IIRC

the use of plastic in lenses has effects on cost, subjective feel, but probably not quality if done correctly

so what is best?

I agree with Rockwell for the most part and in particular about the 18mm f/2.8 (and add the 14mm f/2.8 to the list). Worst lens I have used was the original Nikon 12-24mm f/4 DX lens that came out in 2003 and was very soft to the point of not being usable. It was also an expensive lens and without a doubt the worst value in the Nikon lineup.
