p.1 #1 · Tokina 12-24 on Canon FX

Although at present I am stuck with a crop sensor camera (40D) I am planning to migrate to Canon full frame within the next couple of years.

I am therefore looking ahead and considering how to rationalize my current lens lineup, I am particularly interested in an ultrawide lens. I already own the Tokina 12-24 which is wonderful on DX, but this lens wasn't designed for full frame use. Nevertheless I understand that some photographers use this lens on Canon FX for the 15 - 25mm range without noticeable vignetting?

I would be grateful to learn whether any Fred Miranda photographers can confirm that this lens is in fact usable on full frame, and what the corner quality is like at the widest useable setting.

Thanks

I've heard tell that its fine if you don't zoom it back past 14 or 16mm.

On a side note, would that mean that a lens like that would be ok on a 1DmkIII (1.3x crop?)

On full frame, the Tokina 12-24 is doable from 18mm onward. Beyond 18mm you'll get dark corners.

Also consider the Sigma 10-20. Although I generally prefer the Tokina over the Sigma, the Sigma's image circle is better for FF. On a 5D it reaches from 13-20mm, while the Tokina reaches 18-24mm. The Sigma's range is obviously much more useful on a 5D, coming very close to the widest lens available for the EF mount (Sigma 12-24).

Useful, as in "light strikes the corners"?

Or, useful, as in "reasonable detail is resolved in the corners"?

I stuck a modified EF-S 18-55 kit lens on my 5D for shits 'n giggles one day. It "worked" at 21mm and up, but it was only good for a chuckle.

It will work without vignetting from 17-18mm and up, I've tried it but havent kept any photos. It would be a lens for 18-24 but not the best option in terms of corner sharpness. Personally I dont worry much about it as I try to draw the eye away from the corners as much as I can anyway but if corner sharpness is needed eg interiors etc then its probably not the best option.

Here's a pic I took with this lens on a crop body and why I generally dont care about corner sharpness

I just got Tokina 12-24 few days ago and tried taking couple shots on 5D just yesterday. I found at 19mm and above it is useful on FF. Maybe it is because of UV filter but at 18mm, I see dark corners at extreme end.
