I'd be surprised if you all haven't read Toothwalker's site thoroughly:

Vincent Laforet had 1 chopped off bokeh shot with EF 200/1.8 as well.

Thank you Leon that confirms what I suspected. This is an annoying artifact that makes me want to switch to a Leica digital should a wad of cash fall from the sky.

Granted not all lenses experience this but geez you would think you could design a body that doesn't stuff up some of your best lenses (85mm 1.2L?!) with camera clipping like this.

end rant

alternatively, you could just decide that it doesn't bother you at all. It never occurred to me to be bothered, and still doesn't.

So you never have clipped bokeh? Maybe it is crop body problem? I have to test my fast lenses on the 5DII.

It definitely looks like it's because of the mirror box in that shot.

Edit: AND in the 85 L shot. The "cutoff" is parallel with the image frame.

It happens on crop and full frame bodies nikon and canon take your pick. Anyway we should get back to admiring the blur clipped or otherwise

Chopped bokeh: it's the mirror box.
It happens on my 5DII with 85L as well. It sucks.
I wonder if 1Ds bodies do that too. Anyone ?

This phenomenon is a direct result of the mirror box entry size being smaller than the size of the rear element, so it happens much more on cameras with a smaller mirror box (crop cams).

On my 5D, I have not seen it happen with any of my Rokkor 58/1.2s, my FD 85/1.2 SSC Aspherical or my Rokinon 85/1.4 (or any of my other lenses, for that matter). I suspect it could be a problem with the EF 85L (because it has a larger rear element than any of the lenses mentioned) but I did not use the lens (rented) extensively enough and I wasn't specifically looking for this when I had it.

It is easy enough to visualize, if you simply imagine light emerging from a large circle and entering a rectangle with a height < the diameter of the circle. Large circles (rear elements) and/or small rectangles (mirror boxen) exacerbate the issue.

So, the answer remains; I don't see this on my 5D -- not with any of the lenses I have owned or still own. On crop bodies it is much more common (there are many more lenses with rear element sizes that exceed the size of crop body mirror boxen). It just so happens that none of the lenses I use have a circle that is larger than the height of my camera's rectangle.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I think I might have seen it on my 5D with my EF 85/1.8, which has a rear element that is greater in diameter than the FD 85/1.2 SSC Aspherical, Rokinon 85/1.4, etc. Sorry I forgot about this lens, but I use it so rarely... I'm not sure...

That's not surprising, considering the size of the rear element:

When we look at the EF 85/1.2 L, we see something similar:

Adapting my Zuiko 100/2 for Nikon. Only works wide open at this point but I'm loving it so far! Grab shot after dinner last night (yeah, I think flower shots are pretty lame too, but I'm excited about this lens);

I know, I wasn't surprised.

@Cgiff: nice 3d-ness in your 1st flower shot, but there's imperfection spots in circular highlights in both shots, perhaps there's something in the elements themselves (air bubbles, coupling seperation) ?

Sweet Jebus the 100/2 has fantastic bokeh and three-dimentionality!!
Very Nice shots which I think have been truly enhanced by the lens used.

Looking forward to seeing more

Ellipsoid bokeh? Very unique. If I were in Nikon I'd make you an offer you would not refuse.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

The Zuiko OM90/2 Macro does the same:

And the lens is for sale, please feel free to redirect that offfer.

Not unique at all. It is called "the cats eye effect" and it is quite common.
