Maybe when these lenses work on the D700.

p.4 #2 · Who is going to switch now?

It just doesn't matter enough to me to switch. Yes, the mid-priced Nikon bodies appeal to me more as do their wide zooms, but my lens collection is fairly Canon-specific, with a 24L, MPE and 300/4IS - as well as a 500/4 the Nikon equivalent of which would cost me thousands more.

So while pro-AF in a compact body is something I would very much like to have, Canon's lens system is still more than enough to keep me in the Canon fold.

David,

24 lenses, most of them L, with a Do thrown in for good luck and here I am feeling awkward about my 9 L and 2 USM lenses. How many bodies, if one may ask?

Do you ever wish you could look into Canon's corporate mind and understand what they think about these developments and how they really preceive their standing among serious amateur and professional photographers? With the introduction of the D700, Nikon has again found Canon sleeping at the helm. My guess is that the much awaited 5D mark whatever will place second to this latest Nikon offering. I hope I'm wrong but I am getting used to being dissapointed by Canon. I would like to avoid the migration over to Nikon as I have so much invested in Canon glass but I can't go on buying $8K bodies with so so autofocus and mediocre high ISO performance. Sorry for the rant, I sometimes wish Canon read these forums.

So what lens did you put on the camera to take this shot?

From all this angst, you would think that all Canon bodies just turned into dust. I would be willing to bet that, 5 years from now(or more), a good pro will still be able to sell an image they take with a 5D with little to no problem. I'm in, I'm not changing, but the tide eventually will, and then back, and then back again. That's the way the tide works.

The way I look at it, just gives me a better opportunity to pick up a nice, used 5D for a great low price.

If I was just now considering a DSLR at that level, I would consider the D700.
But since I already have a 40D & a MkII, I think I have all the tools I can handle.

All those nice features are unlikely to get you better pictures.
People are still making the money shots with "old" Canon 1DMkII in sports.
Landscape guys are still taking stunning images with 5D, 1DsMkII, film, view cameras.
Heck, there some guy taking incredible images with a P&S.

The only advantage for a guy like me would be a one-camera solution.
I am not sure the D700 is it.

Maybe now Canon will add a useful auto ISO option on whatever the forth coming camera is.

Come on, how hard would it be? Heck they could even add it via firmware to the older models.

About the only thing I'm missing from my 40D that I would find truely useful.

Years ago I considered moving to Nikon with the D100 vs. the D60 (I had considered the D30 but couldn't bring myself to pay $3300 so bought the Oly E10 fixed lens SLR after a number of early digicams including the G1--and after years of Canon shooting, mainly FD mount), BUT---Nikon piddled around for a very long time--long after I had the D60 in hand in April of the year it came out. I went back and bought a D30 as backup (I did parttime commercial shooting for the furniture/textile industry--retired last year) and I moved through those to the 10D (which I recently had converted to IR), 20D and bought the 5D 2.5 years ago. I'm pretty happy with my lenses, love the 5D and will stick with it until it dies. Then--I'll buy the 5D replacement 'whenever'. Basically I'm an amateur now and the 5D suits me fine. Granted, there are lots of bells and whistles that would be great but IQ is paramount and for my style--I don't need more in truth. At this point in my life, I am for sure not going to sell and start over LOL. I love new gear as much as most and do understand others' lure to Nikon, but don't see it as reasonable except for a very few--and certainly not for me.

If everyone switches, that means better deals and lots of options (used) in the Buy & Sell for Canon gear.

I might trade new Canon product introduction for dependable quality control.

Why trade? they have are great camera's!!! there are many people making money with both brands. I stay with Canon because of the lens selection well at least the low end lenses I can't afford the ones I really want

I was a happy Nikon film shooter from 1985 to 2004, but when I bought my first digital SLR in 2005 (the Rebel XT), I did so only after convincing myself after much studying that Canon was far ahead of Nikon relative to its digital technology. At that time, that was true. However, in 2008 it's debateable! Making the switch in 2005 was painful, as I said goodbye to a lot of Nikon gear that I had accumulated over the years. But I really been enjoying learning about my new Canon glass, which I've found superior to Nikon's lineup (I've bought the 50 1.4, the 85 1.8, the 70-200 4 IS, the 24-105 4 IS and the 10-22 3.5-4.5 over the past few years). I'm also very technology-oriented (studied computer science in college), but I've found the learning curve in shooting digitally to be higher than I originally anticipated. Why haven't my keepers been as high as they were with film? Simply perhaps because I was so much more careful setting up my film shots? I don't know, but there are too many times when I just haven't been as satisfied with the digital output of what I swore was going to be the perfect picture as I set it up. I've now convinced myself that one way to spend less time in post-processing is to shoot full-frame. I really didn't comprehend or fully appreciate the difference between FF and cropped sensors when I bought the Rebel XT and the 40D (I replaced the XT with a 40D right when the 40D came out last year). However, after spending the last year lurking in this forum, in DPReview and in other forums, I now believe that FF is the way to go. Recently, I borrowed a friend's 5D. Using the same 24-105 lens, I shot the same portrait scene at the same time with the same variables (f/4, 800 iso, etc.), with the only change being that I shot at an 80mm focal length with the 5D and at a 50mm focal length with the 40D (50 X 1.6=80). To my eyes, the shot with the 5D just looked slightly to moderately superior from all perspectives - colors, contrast, sharpness, DOF, everything. So where does that leave me? Wanting FF badly, but wanting current technology instead of 3-year old technology (3 FPS on the 5D just doesn't cut it for occasional action shots I take of my dog and of other sporting events). And, I'm your classic long-time passionate amateur who loves plastering the walls of his house with his favorite pictures, but who never will be a professional and has no desire to carry around the heft of a 1D series body (or Nikon's D3, for that matter). So, unless Canon comes out with a 5D replacement very, very soon, the temptation to go back to my roots will be too tough to ignore. That D700 looks mighty fine to me. I would be curious to see what Nikon has done with its glass the past three years.

Am I the only one who doesnt understand the rationale behind switching? Ok so the Mk III series has some flaws and Nikon has had some great products come out, but if the new Canon lineup doesnt suit your tastes, just dont buy it and stick with what works. Just because there IS a new camera to buy doesnt mean your old stuff cant give you the same high quality results that it has in the past. Is a pro studio photog or sports shooter really going to lose money or not sell his images because he's not using a Mk II instead of the Mk III or the D3?

Two 1D's, and a 5D.

Actually, not all of those lenses were mine. Two friends and I got together for a "lens testing party" several years back. Right after I got my 400 DO, as I recall. I was mainly interested in testing it against the 500/4 and 100-400.

I brought some of my lenses, and they brought the rest.

At the time, I know I didn't own that 100-400, for example (I'd already sold mine). Nor did I own the 70-300 DO. I don't think I owned the 15/2.8 at the time, but I own that copy now.

Seriously, the majority of working pros I know rarely buy the latest and greatest simply because it's available. The majority of working PJ's and sports photographers I know shoot their existing bodies into the ground before purchasing something new. Good friend of mine who's been a sports and action photographer for 25 years just recently retired his Nikon D1x! As for me yes I did just buy a new Mark III but my Mark II's still serve me very well and are total workhorses. One of the Mark II's just blew a shutter and I plan on getting it replaced and keep rolling with it until it falls apart. Bottom line is when I sell an image the client doesn't know if it was shot with an old MK II or the new MK III and they don't care. But again if your a total gearhead, don't mind losing money, and think that the newest Nikon's are going to drastically transform your photographic abilities then why not go for it.

Come on this is the real world, we don't care about working pros, I'm a bludging amateur and I love spending my cash and talking a whole lot of trash.

You do realise most of the crap written by us here is hot air and spleen venting. At the end of the day hardly any one will actually swap.

I am sooo on the fence about this.. I mean.. my excuse before was no full frame, then Nikon put the D3 out... next I said there were no Tilt and shift options for Nikon.. then they put out two T&S lenses (micro I may add), my next complaint was nothing that great in order of fast primes.. I swear if they put out faster and better primes from 24mm up to 135mm.. I will file a lawsuit to have a judge order Nikon out of my HEAD!! I mean they answered just about everyone one of my gripes... all they have yet to do is lay a D3 and D700 under my pillow while I was asleep.. Come on Canon.. I am running out of excuses not to go! But in all seriousness I will be staying with Canon.. I LOVE my results from the 5D and 1DmkIII and my fast primes.
