Most likely not at 61 I am not as fast as I once was and the few pounds over weight doesn't help plus I am sure the animals will take down the oldest and biggest for a good snack
ALWAYS go to the zoo with someone older and slower than yourself.

^^ great shot
this was through a small chainlink fence....a couple of shots you could see more of the blurr of the fence. i got right up next to it with my 80-200 and held the end of the lens lined with the "hole" in the fence and hoped for the best.

The guys have pretty much summed up the tips.. Chain link fences are tougher because the lighter color can create a bit of haze.. Some ball fields have nets for screens.. I've seen green screens, black screens.. The smaller "holes" in fishing net screens can add a little softness to your pictures.. I keep my lens hood on and press the hood against the screen, trying to center the lens as close as I can with the spaces in the links.
I'm including a couple of pictures I shot late this afternoon of a local American Legion game.. I was shooting through a black net screen.
The first photo was taken with a classic 1D.. 300/4 EF with a 1.4x extender..

The second photo was tougher.. I used my second camera, a 40D with a 70-200/2.8 lens. I was sitting closer to first base and had to turn and shoot through the screen at an angle to get the play at the plate. The sun was behind the players, so there was going to be a potential backlight problem. The photo--part of a sequence--turned out better than I expected.
Please excuse my post-processing skills.. I'm a longtime film camera shooter who's trying to learn all the stuff about sharpening, unsharp mask, saturation, RAW, JPGs, etc.. By the way, the photos were shot in RAW and then converted to smaller jpg files. I cropped them a little, applied USM, and tried to tweak the histogram a bit for better brightness/contrast.

Shot this yesterday with the 70-200 2.8 IS, I was about 3 feet away from the chain link fence, the blurr still melted the fence away which surprised me.
