Is it right to draw the conclusion that AF is maybe not as fast as one would have hoped given the HSM motor?
It's also really disappointing to read about these AF problems. It's a good thing I wasn't planning to buy until later in the year anyway, hopefully Sigma has tightened up their QA by then.
The AF is certainly not as fast as some of my faster lenses like the Canon 85/1.8 USM, but it's very fast. The only things I don't like are the DOF scale and the obvious AF issues, which will hopefully be fixed tomorrow
just picked the lens up... And it's just as bad as before. I am at work posting from my phone. I decided to test on a 40d, and low and behold, no issues. The service report indicated i have a 5d, but the sigma service centre probably doesn't have any full frame ef bodies to test on. I'm starting to think sigma accidentally left the "DC" suffix off this lens' model.

same thing here..They told me it works just fine on the 30D/40D they had and had no 1DMKII to test on and everything. So maybe its only playing properly with newer cameras or something.

I've e-mailed sigma and asked if possible to swap for a pre-tested copy, but i doubt they can accommodate such a request, since it's likely they don't have a properly performing firmware. Really irresponsible on their part he you ask me.
There was a review test on FF (1Ds-M3) been published by one Chinese pho-org just few days ago. Share with you guys, the result is interesting
(Add prefix http: in front of those URLs for downloading original files. Too large to paste here)
Would love it if my lens produced results that sharp from >3m but as of yet I have not seen a single copy capable of this on a full frame body.

I read the whole report and they didn't have ONE sample image focusing beyond 10' nor did they mention performance in this range.
EDIT:
Trying some settings and about 1 in 4 is getting CLOSE to proper focus using the following custom functions, maybe another 5D/1D(s) user can try them and see what happens?
These are the ones remotely related to AF.
AF-assist beam 1: Does not emit
Flash firing 1: Does not fire
AF point selection method 0: Normal
E-TTL II 0: Evaluative
AF point activation area 1: Expanded
Focusing Screen 0: Ee-A
(was using Ee-S setting before with haoda split prism micro-collar screen, now have to EC+ 1 stop), Ee-A is the standard 5D screen.
Sigma rep named Desiree Gaige says she has a Sigma 50mm that works perfectly on the 5D in her office and says I should take my body in with my lens for calibration. No samples or proof though.
I'm sending the lens back to B&H and waiting a few months before I try again.
She said she could get me a couple of jpegs but B&H have said they can take it back... Has you heard whether yours is corrected 05xrunner? Or have you got to send your body in?
Ahh fair enough I just got a call from CR Kennedy saying they'll swap it for me and I can test the new copy before I leave their office, terrific of them really! results in a couple of hours.
EDIT:
Just got back from CRK, their sample exhibited the exact same problem. Nick (the boss there) is going to ask higher ups about it and also test their copy on his 1DSmkII and see what happens.
At least no one can say it was my technique :P cos Nick took all the test shots and he's a pro.

I was finding some of the comparison as you wish.
Check this out: http://210.238.185.197/~maro/lens_test.html#50mmF1.4
Your concern is also mine, I don't want a missing focus lens on my eos. I will just probably go the store bringing my laptop along and test. Have to go back to C1.4 if I can't find one without this issue.
those are all on the SD14, a crop frame body. Neither mine nor the dealer's lens have any issues on crop frame bodies. The >10' issue is only evident on full frame bodies.
While i'm waiting for Sigma to fix/calibrate my lens, I called the dealer I bought the lens from and they were very helpful and will exchange the lens for another one/another model if the calibration does not fix it.
I'll report on this as/when it happens, but so far Kudos to AJ Purdy
After reading through this posting, I think I will pass on the Sigma 50mm. I really love this focal length, but there just does not seem to be an excellent AF lens in this range.
Guess I will have to find a nice MF lens... perhaps the Rokkor 58mm or the Canon 45mm TS.
The assumption of some that this is only a problem on a FF or 1.3x cropped camera is wrong.
I tested it on the following cameras and got the same results on each. BF in increasing amounts from 3 ft. and beyond on a XT, XTi, 40D, 1DMKIII, and 1DsMKIII. Attempts to adjust the MA on the 1 series failed since the correction was beyond the MA borders.
