Indeed. After all the wailing and gnashing of teeth here on FM, I was pretty shocked to get my two D300's about a week after the official release date. And, I was pretty far down the waiting list.
Just hold off for a day or two (or at worst, a week or two), and you'll probably have a good base on which to form your answer.
Nikon's track record on body releases isn't that bad. It's much worse for lenses.
D200: announced 11/1/05, available 12/16/05
D2Xs: announced 6/1/06, available 7/06
D80: announced 8/10/06, available 9/06
D40: announced 11/16/06, available 12/06
D40x: announced 3/6/07, available 4/07
D300: announced 8/23/07, available 11/07
D3: announced 8/23/07, available 11/07
D60: announced 1/29/08, available 3/08
Of course these dates don't mean that there weren't shortages or that they were available everywhere.

If it gets announced, it should be available for the Summer Olympics.
How relevant is that? I expect that the sports shooters will be using D3 or 1D MK III bodies rather than a lower level body that is so new to the market. Put another way, how will the D700 better capture Olympic images than a D3?

EB
I gotta say, I'm with EB on this. Why would any Nikon shooter fly out to the Olympics with anything less than the D3?
I hav ea feeling many more amateur photographers will be at the Olympics that professionals. So the odds are that the D700 will be a better marketing strategy.
Of course, that is supposing a lot of people will go to the Olympics this year. I have a feeling that the protests will keep the population down compared to other locations...
Tuesday announcement confirmed today by...industry insider
Delivering bodies at/near date promised at announcement no longer seems to be a Nikon problem. We'll know Tuesday when to expect this camera.
I agree that the protests might keep the audience down but amateur guys without credentials don't get track side access or any sort of access for that matter - not at the Olympics. The agency shooters will still be armed to the teeth and that means D3's, 1DMkIII's (or MkII's as you can trust the focus ) and all the fast glass.
