I think that's great that Nikon is coming out with the D700 FX. A lot of people have been wanting one for sometime. Myself I am not going to switch to FX I have too much money invested in my DX lens & cameras. I am just starting to explore my D300 in which I bought In Dec of 07. Everyday this wonderful camera amazes me, and it will continue to for a long long time. I like the fact I can shoot at ISO 3200 and ISO 100 and the shots are keepers, I don't print any "poster size stuff" so my D200 and D300 will do me for a long time. And like Panos with the extra cash that I save I can spend it on holidays .
This is a brief follow up of my previous post on this thread. I continue to enjoy film, the cheapest full frame there is. I still use ancient cameras that are limited by their technologies but "technology does not take pictures." The files from those cameras are colorful and full of details.
The second hand market is getting more and more interesting with prices that should delight everyone.
Can you image in this technological revolution people still buying Holgas?

The D700 will be a nice camera, but the new FX sensor will have zero effect on the quality of your images. Great, look at all the detail in that incredibly dull scene! Wow, the colors are amazing on that generic snapshot you took!
But hey, if people want to flood the market with cheap DX stuff, I'm all for it.
nanana: That's NOT Nikon's official site. That's simply someone's blog who went out and bought the URL. The fact that Nikon didn't buy that URL is actually a little scary - not that Nikon would use it but when I worked for an infomercial company, we bought every variant on our names we could think of so other people couldn't hijack our URLs.

I think it was meant as a joke - at least I hope so.
D700 seems pretty likely to me though, seems like a good fit. I'd be just as happy if the announcement was that they were ramping up their lens production so you can actaully GET some of their glass. New or improved glass is always good too. We'll know soon enough I suppose
To me, this seems even more far fetched if they're using a Sony sensor. Nikon already has a 12MP sensor they can slap in a body, but if they have a new sensor, wouldn't Sony want to release it first and take all the glory? Seems that way to me, but I'm just judging it on Sony's past behavior where they want everything to themselves (even to the point of cutting their own throat, which they do repeatedly).
I really don't care what they release, as long as it's good and provides real competition to Canon, who needs several blows to the head....

Just because the D700 may be announced, when will it be released
The D3 and D300 were announced ages before anyone actually got their hands on them. Months and months if memory serves me correctly.

According to a post on another D700 thread these are the Nikon announcement/release dates from the D200 forward. I haven't verified them...just passing them along.
"Nikon's track record on body releases isn't that bad. It's much worse for lenses.
D200: announced 11/1/05, available 12/16/05
D2Xs: announced 6/1/06, available 7/06
D80: announced 8/10/06, available 9/06
D40: announced 11/16/06, available 12/06
D40x: announced 3/6/07, available 4/07
D300: announced 8/23/07, available 11/07
D3: announced 8/23/07, available 11/07
D60: announced 1/29/08, available 3/08
Of course these dates don't mean that there weren't shortages or that they were available everywhere."
One question I have is why would Nikon call this camera a D700? What happened to the 400, 500, 600? Why not the D300x or something like that. Makes me doubt the validity of this whole string.
