I'm holding on to my D300's until the next, better DX-sensor camera comes along, or until I can afford to keep my two D300's and add a third body with an FX sensor. Waiting until the D300's successor comes out is more likely, of course.
But for airshows, airplanes, and wildlife, DX is my tool of choice.

Hmmm, my D3 seems to do OK for full frame, but I may need to grab an extra D300 during the "fire sale" I think is coming! I love gettin' a deal!

Steve, sent you a PM. I want to be one of the first to sell my D300 before the prices drop too fast!

Are they even going to be worth $500 on the 1st??
Know what though - I still see the D300 hanging around as a fantastic camera for a long time. I would like to use my D3 for wildlife, but that crop on the 300 makes it my wildlife camera of choice most of the time. (D3 gets all the other stuff)
Cool, what we should do is start a new thread every time someone wants to post something about the D700 rumour / gossip/ web page that just saw. We shouldn't even post a reply, just start a new topic each time.
This is absurd. The D300 was $1800 US. It sells in some places now for as low as $1640. The D700 is reportedly going to be $3000 (some sites reported $3200). That's a very wide differential. There's plenty of room for both cameras in Nikon's lineup. And I guarantee you that there is a more than body-weight and seals difference between the D3 and the D700. Nikon isn't stupid.
It's fascinating how quickly people are willing to dump amazing cameras for the "next best thing" when they have probably not even mastered the capabilities of the camera they have! Seriously.. at this stage in the game, both the d300 and the d3 out-resolve 35mm.. what do you really need??
Not to mention all the work of selecting lens that are sharp and work for your purposes...

Better to master the capibilities of the latest & greatest while dumping the old.
Sometimes the old in the right hands makes no diffrence Some need the new to keep the creative drive going, others do not. The D700 is all about the market place. The D3 will still be the master long after
I definitely won't be dumping my D300, but that doesn't mean I'm not salivating at the prospect of the D700 either (or a Rangefinder for that matter). There's definitely room in the Nikon line-up for these products, but unfortunately, it takes deep pockets for those interested. I keep thinking about Moore's law regarding processing power . . . 18-months to double processing power . . .
I was ready to take a big plunge into camera gear 10 years ago (I had been shooting a Ricoh film SLR since my college days), but the market signals told me to hold off (digital was still fairly new, but the handwriting was on the wall). Nikon is tapping into a 10-year pent-up demand in this consumer, and fortunately, my budget constraints aren't nearly so . . . "constraining" at this point in my life.
That said, I don't want to be on the bleeding edge either. I'm definitely interested in Full-Frame (FX), but the D300 is more capable than I am at the moment . . . plus the DX sensor has some advantages . . .

So, I'm assuming you got my PM. eh...$500 sounds kinda low... Counter offer coming your way...
This is brilliant! Assuming this thing comes out soon, we will only have to wait 12 months or so for a better small FX camera to come out - at which point the prices of these ones will fall and we can all pick up cheap ones!
While I don't doubt that Nikon will release a camera like this, I'll wait for Nikon to announce it to start getting excited about it. Personally I can wait until September for an announcement, as I'm not ready to buy one yet.
I don't think the point is about kicking the D300 out of the lineup, but rather complementing it. The D300 / D700 would make a great pair, giving us both the reach of DX sensor and the ultra-low noise of an FX sensor for about the price of the D3. Sure, I'd love the D3, but the D700 concept puts full frame in the reach of more people, even if it is still a rather small group. Hopefully I'll eventually be in that group.
And yes, we sure could use some new lenses. Either that, or start producing some the ones already in the lineup! These shortages are getting ridiculous. While I'm not really in need of any more lenses (I sure hope my wife doesn't read this!) I'd like to see more people be able to get the ones they want. Okay, so I salivate for an AF-S 85mm f/1.2 also... and a 24mm f/1.4,,, and a...
