Well, I came across this link in the Lighting forum: DIY Ring Flash So I decided to make my own. I didn't follow his instructions to the "T" but the result is just about the same. Diagram and BOM here: Parts List
Sorry about the volume of images, but it should help explain the "cause and effect".
Well, it's not for every situation, but it's certainly a good piece of equipment to have in your lighting arsenal. With this ring flash I found that I can certainly shoot f/10+ at 1/200th+ most of the time...ambient BG exposure is somewhat difficult.

Mike, sorry, my links in my first post were broken (fixed now). The diffusing material is Chefmate Cutting Mat (found at Target). Just reference the parts list here: Parts ListCutting Mat
Note, Lowes doesn't even stock a 5" to 4" duct reducer (center part), but Home Depot does.

Very nice, I want to try this myself. How well does this work for portrait photography, especially outside? I don't have any other lights other than the 580EXII.
