I just bought 100-400L from one of FMers. When push-pull mechanism works, some black particles - like ashes- are coming from the front element. I guess, they are coming from inside of the tight-light ring surface. I added some pics in here. http://canonfm.googlepages.com/100-400 I have not enough knowledge about what it is. if you help me, I will appreciate. what is it that, what may cause it, is that a big problem and if I want to be fixed, how much it will cost?
Some dusts inside the lens and this problem come as a surprise so does lens worth buying?
Chances are the black particles you described are black flocking materials that became loose over time. Generally, a little dust or particles, especially in the front area of the lens should not have any impact of the image quality. Just make sure you don't have any front or back focusing issues with it on your camera and after that, go out there and enjoy your new lens.

It is flocking that helps the zoom slide smoothly. Mine has done that also, usually after I have been over tightening the lock ring. No effect on operation or photos though.
Standard charge is close to $180 or so. Then add shipping with insurance. Unless something is wrong with the lens, then canon will tell you about it when they open or inspect. I never seen this before on my 100-400L.
I have had the same problem with my lens. It looks like small black flakes of something like a sleeve. After a while the lock that holds the lens at the different zoom lengths did not lock anymore. From the start, I made sure that I don't overtighten the lock but then it stopped working. I gave it in for repairs and when I got it back it only worked for a day or two! Then it started sliding in and out again with no real friction even when the lock was tightened. Anybody else having such a problem?
