Gary - This was done by drawing a Path around the flare. Doesn't have to be exact but close. Then make a Selection from the Path and, in this case because it was low res, feather the selection a few pixels. The amount of the feather changes with the resolution. Then make a Curves Adjustment Layer and use the Curves dialog box to bring that part of the image down in value. You'll get it close with the RGB master curves but then need to use the individual color curves to match the color and tonality of the background. After you get it looking as good as you can there will be a visible edge because the original selection will not have been perfect. Now you paint on the Layer Mask portion of the Adjustment Layer with a soft edged brush - either black or white to mask or unmask the effect of the curves. If you go too far, paint it back with the opposite color, remember that when you're painting on a layer mask, it's always in black or white, or percentages of either.

Which comp do you prefer and why? All are similar, all shot on fp4+ film, developed in d76 1:1, shot on a canon A1 with a vivitar 28/2.5 w/ yellow filter, Pakon scanned and some slight adjustments in LR6.
1. My wife's choice (she opts for tighter comps)
2. My choice (I opt for looser compositions, just my preference)
3. alternate 1
Thanks in advance for the feedback. Oh, and FWIW, this is High Shoal Falls in North GA near Brasstown Bald (highest point in GA).
The bargain hunter in me has just about decided to stop buying expired film. More trash than treasure for my shekels and my PP skills are just not that good. Here is some 20 year+ expired Kodak Vericolor II Type L film. I shot it at 32. It is what it is...

There's plenty of cheap non expired color film to shoot. AgfaPhoto Vista 200 is amazingly cheap. I just bought 12 rolls for my upcoming trip. Scans beautifully.

That tends not to hold true for 4X5, Tom, especially if you like to shoot slide film.
