I think you'll need to get the BetterScanning holders - my understandings is that the Canonscan is comparable to the Epson flatbeds if your output is reasonable.
I am still tempted to get a DSLR and macro lens and just shoebox scan.
What equipment do you need besides the camera and lens to do this properly? I'm wondering how much the extras cost. Do you know if you have to have a 1:1 macro lens do make good scans with a camera?

You need a way of holding the negatives/slides - lots of different ways of doing this. You'll also need a light source that's well-diffused. Aside from that, it seems pretty self-explanatory. If you have a standard lens that does not have any distortion (50mm-70mm) I don't think you would need 1:1, you just would need one or two extension tubes. Check this out:
Quick question for my analog 35mm shooters. Pentax spotmatic or Olympus ftl for screw mount? I have a bunch of screw mount lenses for a mamiya dtl1000 but not the biggest fan of that body however would like to use the lenses and know they are compatible with the pentax and the Olympus. Your thoughts?
